Gun nut extremist groups on the rise

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks all extremist groups and found that the gun worshippers are on the move again in terms of patriot groups and militias. 1360 of the former in 2012 compared to 149 in 2008. 321 militias compared to 42 in the same period. We mustn't forget that Timothy McVeigh was an extremist group sympathizer and he killed 19 children (only one less than Sandy Hook Elementary) in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

The general consensus is that this rise in groups is due to the election of Barack Obama in 2008 and his 2012 reelection. Although nothing happened in his first four years, the President, and VP Joe Biden, now are proposing sweeping gun control legislation including banning assault weapons and passing universal background checks.

Daryl Johnson, former Dept. of Homeland Security official says SPLC's numbers are likely conservative. He adds that DHS has not changed re. extremists in the last four years and that is "quite unsettling."

Arizona Governor loses again on SB1070

It is hard to keep up with the harebrained antics of the Arizona GOP legislature and its foggy governor, Jan Brewer. The Republicans can pass bills and she can sign them faster than the public can keep up with their blunderings. Like SB-1070, which was ramrodded through by ousted and disgraced state Sen. Russell Pearce and happily signed by Jan Brewer. Little by little the courts have pecked away at the bill until all that's left is what the police have been doing all along.

The most recent is 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which said that Arizona cannot enforce the provision preventing day-laborers to congregate in places to be picked up for work. The state said it was a safety hazard but the Court said laws are already on the books to prevent that and that SB-1070 targeted undocumented immigrants. Another of our state government village idiots, Tom Horne, says he expects the case to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. More taxpayer dollars down the drain.

Retirement home nurse refuses CPR to dying woman

It is beyond belief that a qualified nurse would refuse to give CPR to a resident of her retirement facility, allowing her to just lie on the floor in front of her gasping for breath. The reason she gave was that the retirement home does not allow staff to administer help in an emergency, only call 911, which the nurse did. The 911 operator begged her to get help from anyone, just grab someone from off the street or the gardner she suggested. The nurse continued to refuse. The woman got worse and the 911 operator pleaded with the nurse for seven minutes to do something for the 87-year-old resident to no avail.

Lorraine Bayless died at the Glenwood Gardens retirement home in Bakersfield, Calif. on February 26. California has a "Good Samaritan" law which the 911 operator told the nurse and explained liability for the nurse's actions were on the emergency medical system. Continued refusal while the nurse watched the resident die. A California official said, "How a nurse can do that is beyond comprehension." Greg Crist, a senior vice president at the American Health Care Association also commented, "Staff members are 'required to perform and provide CPR' unless there's a do-not-resuscitate order," which there wasn't in Bayless' case.

Jeffrey Toomer, Exec. Dir. of Glenwood Gardens, said the nurse followed the facility's policy. And what is even more unbelievable, the daughter of Lorraine Bayless, herself a nurse, agreed with the nurse who let her mother die. This is about as cold-hearted as it gets and you have to wonder about the mentality of that kind of thinking. Also, if I were the other residents of this home, I would be working on arrangements to get out at the earliest date. If there isn't a complete investigation of this incident, there is no justice.

Arizona Gov Jan Brewer is an idiot

Back in 2011, Jan Brewer was selected by a national organization as "The Worst Governor Ever." That's pretty heavy when you consider this half-baked politician walks around wagging her tongue and pointing her finger like she knows what the hell she is doing. She doesn't, doesn't even have a clue, and her stupid antics have made a great state the laughingstock of the country.

Her latest brainlessness is calling for more border enforcement when all data show both violent crime and illegal immigration have dropped measurably in Arizona's southern border. She went airborne in a Black-Hawk helicopter to observe the line between the U.S. and Mexico seeing litter, broken fencing and people preparing to cross illegally. The ride was obviously a waste of taxpayer money when considering those "people preparing to cross illegally" are at a 20-year low. Pew Hispanic Center actually estimates net migration from Mexico at zero or less.

Thank God we have less than two years to go.

If the assault weapons ban passes, should we confiscate all AWs in American homes?

This question will set off a firestorm from the NRA all the way down to the gun bubbas around the country. But I'll bet you would get at least some agreement from many gun owners, even NRA members. In 1994 there was an estimated 1.5 million assault weapons in the U.S. and approximately 50% of American households having guns.

In December of 2012, Justin Peters in Slate takes a different approach. He suggests the government could buy back the assault weapons and wonders what the cost would be. Through a series of calculations using NRA research, a review of background checks, and known increases in sales (you can see all in link below), Peters comes up with around 3,750,000 total AWs in American households, or around 1% of the country's total private arsenal.

Australia did it in 1996, when they bought back 643,726 AWs and shotguns at a cost of an estimated $400 million American. Actually, the legitimate gun owners shouldn't be out the money they spent on their AWs but it could come down to a show of force to settle the assault weapons problem.

Is the “God Particle” the link between science and religion?

It probably depends on your relationship with God, and just how important the creationist theory is in your faith. Beyond that, there is the belief in Christ that is necessary to be a true Christian. Further, religious fundamentalism is an organized, militant Evangelical movement insisting on the inerrancy of Scripture. Even more complicated is the term, “Rapture,” which is shared by many fundamentalists to explain the second coming of Christ.

So have you heard of the Higgs boson discovery, better known as the “God Particle,” without which, scientists tell us, there would be no life in the universe. Fundamentalists and Southern Baptists will no doubt have a big problem with this in relation to the creationist theory. But many will say this doesn’t matter as long as you stick to your beliefs, and there are always those who search, even demand, that we discover the secret to creation and salvation.

An Agnostic might say this is what I have been telling you all along. Since this group does believe in a God of sorts, because they can’t comprehend of a universe this complex without a creative entity, Higgs boson could be the answer to many questions. Supposition might go something like this: a deity created the “God Particle” and science took it from there in the form of the evolution of man. The term “evolution” could even take on a more positive approach in religion.

There is a huge chasm between ideology like the God Particle and passionate religious beliefs, but his new finding will probably never completely replace evolution. Or will it?

Democrats on way to securing female vote in 2014

Did these congressional leaders--Reps. Tom Cotton (Ark.), Steve King (Iowa), Bill Cassidy (La.), John Fleming (La.), Justin Amash (Mich.), Michele Bachmann (Minn.) Kristi Noem (S.D.), Paul Broun (Ga.), Tom Price (Ga.), Phil Gingrey (Ga.), Jack Kingston (Ga.), Austin Scott (Ga.) and Tim Graves (Ga.)--actually vote against a bill designed to prevent violence against women? These 13 represent a majority of the 2014 potential Senate Republican candidates. Yes, the group even included former presidential candidate from Minnesota, Michele Bachmann, who barely squeaked through in 2012. Am I wrong or is she a female? The dirty 13 blamed it on provisions related to the LGBT community, Native Americans and immigrants.

Well, they can blame it on whatever they want because the bill passed anyway, but it certainly has fired up Senate Dems to go after those seats next year.

Congress won't suffer pay cuts in sequester

I know it's the law but don't you think this dysfunctional gang of incompetents in Congress felt smug all along realizing that their pay couldn't be touched? Of course they did. And it just gets worse when House Speaker John Boehner accuses President Obama of being the one holding up negotiations. Obama has said from the beginning that when they came back to the table for this March deadline, the deal would have to be a combination of more revenue with spending cuts. Both the GOP and Dems were behind this plan when it evolved in 2011, primarily made necessary due to the fact that Republicans were perfectly willing to allow a debt default.

Although results of the sequester won't be noticeable right away, $85 billion has to be cut from the budget, and because the framers designed this mess to be so God-awful that no rationally thinking group would let it happen, they made the cuts specifically mandatory so there would be no possibility of a strategic approach. It is hard to believe that we have mature grown men and women in Congress. We don't.

Well anyway, the Congressional Budget Office says that even with all the tax cuts looming, the economy will still grow at an inflation-adjusted rate of 1.4% this year. Not enough to help economic recovery.
