We were duped:' How George Santos raised money from wealthy GOP donors while lying about his resume

"A Santos campaign fundraiser impersonated Kevin McCarthy’s chief of staff to help raise campaign cash."

A member of George Santos’ political team had a plan to raise money for the congressman’s campaign: impersonate Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s chief of staff.

Wealthy donors received calls and emails from a man who said he was Dan Meyer, McCarthy’s chief of staff, during the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, according to people familiar with the matter. He was actually named Sam Miele, and worked for Santos raising money for his campaign, according to one GOP donor who contributed to Santos’ campaign. This financier and some others in this story declined to be named in order to speak freely about private discussions.

The imitation of the chief of staff of the top House Republican adds to an emerging picture of a winning congressional campaign propelled by fabrications and questionable tactics. Santos now finds himself in the sights of investigators and in danger of losing his political career even after he’s been sworn into office. In raising money for his campaign, Santos fed donors the same falsehoods he gave voters, campaign fundraisers and others say.

At private events with GOP donors and political leaders, Santos would flaunt or hint at key parts of his resume that have turned out to be false, according to records and people familiar with the matter. The Republican would also tout his business record that’s now in question, including claims that he worked on Wall Street, as a way to encourage donors to contribute to his campaign, according to financiers and party operatives familiar with the matter.

The impact of Kavanaugh's confirmation on the 2018 elections...

...may reveal how the reversal of Roe v. Wade could impact this year's midterms

As political analysts seek to understand the possible impact of Roe v. Wade being overturned on this year's midterm elections, some suggest that data from 2018 may reveal possible trends.

In 2018, following the contentious confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh — who was accused of sexual assault by Christine Ford — 40 Republican US House seats flipped to Democratic candidates. GOP candidates led in polls taken prior to the hearings and went on to lose in November in 27 of those races, indicating increased mobilization among partisan voters following the hearings.

"This is when the midterms were decided. Everything leading up to it was, for many Americans, a gradual erosion of political and societal norms. But nonetheless, it was gradual. Often politically imperceptible. A general state of unease favoring the status quo over an electoral revolution," B.J. Rudell, a political strategist, wrote in an opinion article for The Hill.

Trump Is Guilty of 'Numerous' Felonies, Prosecutor Who Resigned Says

Source: N.Y. Times

One of the senior Manhattan prosecutors who investigated Donald J. Trump believed that the former president was “guilty of numerous felony violations” and that it was “a grave failure of justice” not to hold him accountable, according to a copy of his resignation letter.

The prosecutor, Mark F. Pomerantz, submitted his resignation last month after the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, abruptly stopped pursuing an indictment of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Pomerantz, 70, a prominent former federal prosecutor and white-collar defense lawyer who came out of retirement to work on the Trump investigation, resigned on the same day as Carey R. Dunne, another senior prosecutor leading the inquiry.

Mr. Pomerantz’s Feb. 23 letter, obtained by The New York Times, offers a personal account of his decision to resign and for the first time states explicitly his belief that the office could have convicted the former president. Mr. Bragg’s decision was “contrary to the public interest,” he wrote.

https://floridapolitics.com/archives/485132-john-kuczwanski-killed-in-road-rage-incident/

Kuczwanski was arrested for a separate road rage incident at the same intersection in 2014.

John Kuczwanski, the Legislative Affairs Director for the State Board of Administration, was killed last week in what appeared to be a shootout during a road rage incident north of Tallahassee.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office took one person into custody after the Jan. 6 events, however that person has since been released and no charges have been filed, according to a Thursday LCSO news release.

The office issued an initial statement reporting a fatal shooting that occurred last Thursday, shortly after 5 p.m., near the intersection of Bannerman Road and Thomasville Road, following an altercation between two drivers. Thursday’s release confirmed Kuczwanski was killed in the incident. The investigation into what occurred is still ongoing.

AP Issues Major Correction To Wilbur Ross/DOJ Story

Initially reported that Biden's DOJ made the decision not to prosecute Wilbur Ross for perjury. The decision to not prosecute Ross was actually made by Trump's DOJ, AG Bill Barr.

This story has been corrected to reflect that the decision not to prosecute Ross was made by the Department of Justice during the Trump administration, not the Biden administration.

Cosby Conviction overturned because of Trump Lawyer

https://twitter.com/JanNWolfe/status/1410283653675028480?s=20

Remember Bruce Castor, the lawyer mocked for his performance during Trump's second impeachment?

His promise not to prosecute Bill Cosby, made back in 2005 when he was a DA, is why a court just overturned Cosby's sexual assault conviction.

'Right-Wing Death Squad': Active-Duty Marine Plotted to Bomb DNC, Murder Black People, Feds Say

An active-duty U.S. Marine came under federal investigation for allegedly plotting with at least two others to assassinate minorities, drug users, and employees of the Democratic National Committee with explosives, rocket launchers, and automatic rifles.

That’s according to a newly unsealed FBI search warrant affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast, which indicates USMC Private First Class Travis Owens and his partners in the unrealized murder plot were influenced by Timothy McVeigh, the former U.S. Army soldier behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead and injured nearly 700. The document also states that one of the suspects had links to the Atomwaffen Division, a violent neo-Nazi group linked to at least five murders. A handful of active service members and veterans have been identified as being members of Atomwaffen, which calls for the armed overthrow of the U.S. government.

The investigation began in late August 2019, when a tipster contacted the FBI about disturbingly violent conversations they had observed in a private Facebook Messenger chat group named “Right Wing Death Squad.” According to the FBI, three men were behind the troubling chats: James Wisdom of Arkansas; mechanic Jason D’Juan Garfield—also of Arkansas—who went by the noms de guerre “Moon Man” and “Jugger Bugger;” and Owens, a Marine Corps E-1 from Arkansas stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

“Rhetoric in the private chat messages was consistent with racially motivated extremism ideology, to include aspirational violence against religious and racial minorities,” states the affidavit, which was signed by Special Agent Ryan Crump of the FBI Little Rock Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Fox News agrees to pay $1 million fine for human rights law violation in New York City

Fox News has agreed to pay a $1 million fine to New York City for what the city's Commission on Human Rights dubbed "a pattern of violating the NYC Human Rights Law."

The Daily Beast first reported the news Tuesday.

The settlement, reached last week, concerns allegations of a toxic work environment and sexual harassment at the FOX Corp cable channel, the Daily Beast reported.

"We are pleased to reach an amicable resolution of this legacy matter," a Fox News spokesperson said in a statement to Insider. "FOX News Media has already been in full compliance across the board, but cooperated with the New York City Commission on Human Rights to continue enacting extensive preventive measures against all forms of discrimination and harassment."
