LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A mouse named after "Star Trek" actor Patrick Stewart is officially the world's oldest in captivity, a US zoo has announced.
Pat the Pacific pocket mouse — the smallest species of mouse in North America — bagged the title when he hit nine years and 209 days on Wednesday.

Officials from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance confirmed Pat was still going strong on Thursday.

Right-wing extremists scrambling to get federal cases before 'rogue' Trump-appointed judge

A Donald Trump appointee to the federal bench, who was too extreme even for Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), is living up to the low expectations his critics had for him as he has become the go-to guy for far-right figures pushing culture war issues.

According to a report from the Guardian's Ed Pilkington, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk has already done damage to civil liberties during his four years on the bench in Amarillo, Texas, and is poised and likely to make a devastating ruling that could further limit a woman's right to control her own health by imposing "a nationwide injunction that would in effect ban the abortion pill by nullifying the FDA’s medical approval of one of its key elements, mifepristone."

As Pilkington wrote, conservatives knew what they were getting when the former president nominated the now 46-year-old Kacsmaryk to a lifetime appointment on the bench.

Alec Baldwin says 'Rust' prosecutor made 'elementary legal error'

Alec Baldwin said Friday prosecutors who have charged him over the death of a cinematographer who was shot on a film set have made an "elementary legal error."

The US actor was holding a Colt .45 during rehearsals for low-budget Western "Rust" in October 2021 when it discharged, killing Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

"The prosecutors in this case have committed an unconstitutional and elementary legal error by charging Mr Baldwin under a statute that did not exist on the date of the accident," his legal team wrote.

Fox Corporation has nixed the idea of Pres. Biden doing a Super Bowl Sunday interview on their digital streaming service called Fox Soul, which is targeted towards African-Americans.

Biden's White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted out the White House's disappointment at the network's decision.

The reporting in the Washington Post is too long and detailed to post here but the Daily Beast has a helpful Coles notes version of her many lies. The freshman congresswoman's main claims to fame before entering politics were posing in Gentleman's magazines, often in bathing suits or holding guns.

And though she claims Jewish heritage, like Santos, it turns out that instead her grandfather was a real Nazi. Oops. Slight oversight there.

A damning Washington Post report has questioned several aspects of freshman Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s (R-FL) life story, from her religious and ethnic identity to her impoverished upbringing. Luna’s claim that she grew up poor and isolated, with her father in and out of prison, was not supported by prison records or two relatives who spoke to the Post. When she served at Whiteman Air Force Base a decade ago, she described herself to friends as alternatively Middle Eastern, Jewish or Eastern European, the Post reported. She identified as a white Democrat in voting records but, after entering the political sphere around 2019, she legally changed her last name from Mayerhofer to her Hispanic mother’s family name of Luna and began identifying as Hispanic. Her claim to have a Messianic Jewish father was also disputed by three relatives and immigration records that indicated Luna’s paternal grandfather was a reluctant soldier in the Nazi regime. Her of-repeated story of enduring a traumatizing “home invasion” at Whiteman was also undercut by police records. Luna’s office declined to address the allegations to the Post.

Texas AG Ken Paxton agrees to apologize and pay $3.3 million to whistleblowers in settlement

Attorney General Ken Paxton and four of his former top deputies who said he improperly fired them after they accused him of crimes have reached a tentative agreement to end a whistleblower lawsuit that would pay those employees $3.3 million dollars.

In a filing on Friday, attorneys for Paxton and the whistleblowers asked the Texas Supreme Court to further defer consideration of the whistleblower case until the two sides can finalize the tentative agreement. Once the deal is finalized and payment by the attorney general's office is approved, the two sides will move to end the case, the filing said.

"The whistleblowers sacrificed their jobs and have spent more than two years fighting for what is right," said TJ Turner, an attorney for David Maxwell, a whistleblower and former director of law enforcement for the attorney general's office. "We believe the terms of the settlement speak for themselves."

Labor advocates on Tuesday decried a business-backed bill introduced by Republican state lawmakers in Iowa that would roll back child labor laws so that teens as young as 14 could work in previously prohibited jobs including mining, logging, and animal slaughtering—a proposal one union president called dangerous and "just crazy."

Senate File 167, introduced by state Sen. Jason Schultz (R-6) would expand job options available to teens—including letting children as young as 14 work in freezers and meat coolers and loading and unloading light tools, under certain conditions.

Teens under 18 would still be generally barred from employment in fields including mining, logging, demolition, and meatpacking, and from operating potentially dangerous machinery and equipment, including circular saws, guillotine shears, and punching machines.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s 14th District in the northwest corner of Georgia lies in the center of the lands the Cherokee Nation was forced to vacate at gunpoint during the horrific ethnic cleansing known as the Trail of Tears.

Greene is the infamous Q-Anon follower who now sits in the House of Representatives where she faces calls for her expulsion over her behavior, death threats, and endorsement of outlandish conspiracy theories. Greene has berated fellow legislators in the halls, called for the death of Nancy Pelosi, and stated that the Sandy Hook school shooting and aspects of the 9-11 terrorist attacks were staged. Fellow Republicans have called her “bat-shit crazy” and a “more aggressive” version of Trump, and decried her blatant racism.

Greene won the 14th District easily. The area, known for its “diehard Christian conservatives”, is disproportionately white, poor, and uneducated. It wasn’t always that way.
