Collins to vote for GOP tax plan

Source: The Hill

GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) said on Friday that she will support the Senate tax plan, giving the legislation an additional shot of momentum.

"I will cast my vote in support of the Senate tax reform bill. As revised, this bill will provide much-needed tax relief and simplification for lower- and middle-income families, while spurring the creation of good jobs and greater economic growth," Collins said in a statement.

That means the Senate GOP tax plan, which leadership wants to pass as early as Friday, now has the support of 51 Republican senators. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who has concerns about the deficit, is the only remaining holdout.

Several amendments that Collins offered were incorporated into the bill, including the restoration of a $10,000 deduction for property taxes and a lower threshold for deducting medical expenses.

Lets put the medical item into complete perspective............when you file your return, you have to have in a over cost from your income of 7.6% to declare the medical deduction, in other words Susan Collins is a liar

It is plain and simple

Trump draws embarrassingly tiny crowd for National Christmas Tree lighting

As Donald Trump nears the end of his first year in office, it is clear that nothing about the man has changed since the election.

His holiday party was marred by the awkwardness of his petty exclusion of prominent black and LGBT journalists.

And then, at the National Tree lighting ceremony, he was further humiliated by hundreds of empty chairs:

Fox News refuses to run ad explaining how Trump personally benefits from his tax plan

Fox News is refusing to run an ad from a progressive group that highlights how President Trump will benefit from his tax cut plan.

The ad — part of a six-figure buy by Not One Penny, a group devoted to working toward ensuring that millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations don’t receive “even one penny in tax cuts” — notes that while Trump claims to “tell it like it is,” he refuses to explain why he’s championing a tax plan that contains more than a billion dollars of goodies for his family.

“When it’s time for Trump to explain why his tax plan gives a big cut to the wealthy — including lucrative breaks for golf course owners and cuts for rich heirs, all worth more than a billion dollars for Trump and his family — why is this president suddenly at a loss for words?” the ad’s narrator asks.

This is what happens when James OKeefe succeeds

Source: Think Progress

WASHINGTON, D.C. — James O’Keefe failed to salvage the reputation of Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore earlier this week, putting the right-wing hack back in the spotlight.

That light mostly casts O’Keefe as a fool, an incompetent jester at the margin of King Donald’s court. His hamfisted attempt to “sting” the Washington Post by feeding them salacious, fake accusations against Moore is indeed a fool’s jape. But to treat O’Keefe and his Project Veritas minions only as dweeby incompetents risks forgetting an important lesson about how dangerous his failures can be to the causes of economic justice, gender equality, and even democracy itself.

As the world points and laughs at his failed attempt at rescuing Moore, O’Keefe is perhaps on the verge of a similar gloomy triumph to the one that made him a political microcelebrity back in 2009. Roughly a mile east of the Washington Post building, inside Courtroom 203 of the D.C. Superior Court, the danger O’Keefe poses has been on full display.

Federal prosecutors are using undercover Project Veritas videos from inside organizing meetings for the “Disrupt J20” inauguration protests to persuade a jury that street medics, photojournalists, and bystanders should be jailed for decades because they were nearby when other people smashed up bank windows and tussled with cops.

Trump opens GOP eyes on tax reform

Senate Republicans think President Trump is playing a constructive role in the tax debate and are optimistic about their chances of winning a big legislative victory.

Trump flexed his muscle as an advocate on Capitol Hill Tuesday when he took on Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) during a private meeting after Johnson threatened the day before to vote against the tax bill.

“He told him to stop blocking it and to work out his concerns with the rest of the conference. He told him he would have a chance to offer amendments and he should stop being an impediment,” said a Senate GOP source familiar with the meeting.
“He went at him twice by name,” the source added.

Time to release the internet from the free market and make it a basic right

Say goodbye to net neutrality. Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman, Ajit Pai, released a plan to repeal the landmark protections enacted by the agency in 2015. This has long been a top priority for Pai and his fellow Republicans, who now enjoy a majority of commissioners thanks to Trump. The vote is scheduled for 14 December, and is widely expected to pass along party lines.

What does this mean in practice? In a sentence: slower and more expensive internet service. Net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast should treat all kinds of data the same way. Its repeal means that in the future, your ISP will be able to fleece you in all sorts of new ways.

When you think of the internet without net neutrality, you should think of the pleasures of modern air travel. You pay for a checked bag, you pay for a modicum of legroom, you pay for a lousy sandwich. The internet without net neutrality will likely look similar: the basics are barely tolerable, and everything else costs extra.

This dystopian scenario is why it’s so important to fight the Trump administration’s agenda. But that fight can’t be limited to saving net neutrality.

America is in crisis. The Republican tax plan will make that worse

When Donald Trump was sworn in as president last January, the nation faced several domestic crises. In many places, infrastructure is a disaster, highlighted by the I-35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Flint’s perilous water system and New York’s decaying, delay-plagued subways.

Then there’s the largely unrecognized retirement crisis. One-third of American workers are saving nothing for retirement, and more and more workers in their late 60s and early 70s say they simply don’t have the money to retire.

The US also faces a college affordability and student debt crisis. A year at a public university typically costs more than $20,000 – a hefty price tag for many families when median household income is $59,000. Total student loan debt has soared above $1.3tn, and more than two-thirds of college graduates borrow to go to school. Their average debt upon graduation is about $35,000, triple the level of two decades ago.

And the poverty crisis has not gone away. Nearly 41 million Americans live below the poverty line, with nearly one in five children living in poverty.

MacOS High Sierra bug: blank password lets anyone take control of a Mac

A serious security flaw found in the latest version of Apple’s macOS High Sierra could allow anyone to access locked settings on a Mac using the user name “root” and no password, and subsequently unlock the computer.

The security flaw, discovered a couple of weeks ago and disclosed in an Apple developer support forum, has been shown to work within the software’s user preferences screen, among other locations. Once triggered, the same combination will also bypass the lock screen of Macs running Apple’s latest operating system.

Turkish software developer, Lemi Orhan Ergin, publicised the flaw on Twitter, calling the bug a “huge security issue”:

The Sinister Screw-ups Of James OKeefe

Wednesday, November 29, 2017

Reprinted with permission from MediaMatters.

James O’Keefe’s latest sad attempt to own liberals included hiring a woman to pose as a sexual assault survivor in order to defend a reported child molester — and that says a lot about the political media world that allows him to thrive.

Weeks after the The Washington Post first broke the story that several women reported that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore had sexually harassed or assaulted them when they were teenagers, the paper published several new stories on the matter — this time detailing an apparent “undercover sting operation” aimed at its reporters.

On November 27, the Post reported in uncomfortable detail on its encounters with a woman who communicated and met with reporters Stephanie McCrummen and Beth Reinhard, two co-authors of the Post’soriginal Moore misconduct story. The woman told them a series of false stories about being sexually assaulted by Moore when she was 15 and later terminating a pregnancy that resulted from the serial assault. Unable to substantiate any of the woman’s claims, The Washington Post researched the woman and found details about her identity that contradicted parts of her stories, including a GoFundMe page she had set up in May to support a move to New York City to “work in the conservative media movement to combat the lies and deceipt (sic) of the liberal MSM.”
