Warren kicked off the second Democratic debate by laying out perfectly what is at stake in the 2020 election.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) kicked off the second Democratic debate by laying out exactly why she thinks a Democrat needs to win the 2020 election.
"Donald Trump disgraces the office of presidents every single day, and anyone on this stage tonight or tomorrow night would be a far better president," Warren said in her opening statement.
But she did not stop there. Warren acknowledged the power of unity that she believes will be needed to defeat Trump.

Republicans again rush to the defense of a Trump nominee accused of sexual harassment

Lawmakers and retired military leaders essentially called the alleged victim a liar.

General John Hyten, President Donald Trumps pick to serve as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was questioned by senators on Tuesday about sexual assault allegations leveled against him by a former aide. During his confirmation hearing, Republican lawmakers argued that Hyten was innocent and that the allegations should be disregarded, and spoke of a world in which senior military officers would live in fear of false accusations.
According to a survey released in May by the Defense Department, sexual assault in the military has increased in recent years. It estimated there was a 38% increase in the number of instances of unwanted sexual contact since 2016. In the 2018 fiscal year alone, there were an estimated 20,500 instances of this kind of harassment.
At the beginning of the confirmation hearing, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) said the allegations were bandied about in the press with little regard to the truth. Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) countered that lawmakers could not say with certainty that the alleged victims account was false.
The aide who came forward with allegations, Col. Kathryn Spletstoser, said there were a number of unwanted advances from Hyten, the most serious of which happened when he assaulted her in a hotel room in 2017. She went public with the allegations in April, shortly after he was nominated. Spletstoser said Hyten held her close to him and ejaculated on her. A statement from her lawyer to CNN described the incident:

Scandal-plagued Border Patrol would be in charge of asylum interviews if Stephen Miller gets his way

Newly reported internal emails shed light on the next grim maneuver in the Trump team's nativist campaign to slam the door on non-white immigrants.

White House operative Stephen Miller is maneuvering to further sabotage the asylum process by replacing highly trained career staff with border cops at a crucial early stage.
The scheme would shift responsibility for initial credible fear interviews with asylum-seekers away from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency where its rested for years. Miller is eager to replace USCISs professional asylum interviewers with Border Patrol officers, emails reported by NBC News suggest.
The credible fear interview process has long been a target for President Donald Trumps staffers seeking to radically restrict Latinx immigration. Miller in particular is seen as a prime mover behind Trumps efforts to restrict legal immigration as well as flows of undocumented people including support for work-visa rule changes that experts say would favor white Europeans.
The laws and legal standards underlying those interviews err on the side of asylum-seekers by design, because passing a credible fear check only ensures that the asylum-seeker will get to go before an immigration judge. These first-round interviews are intended to be a modest screening rather than a hard barrier, in part because the final determination of an asylum case is viewed as so sophisticated as to require a courtroom adjudication.

Federal contractor was reportedly misleading about conditions in ICE facilities

According to the Nakamoto Group, detainees were satisfied with all conditions of their confinement. An inspector general report says this isn't true.

A company contracted by the federal government to conduct oversight on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities has reportedly been spending taxpayer dollars to draw up misleading reports about how migrants are treated in detention.
Officials at the company have refused to comment at length on the accusation, insisting they are providing impartial assessments of current conditions.
According to Kaiser Health News, the Nakamoto Group, which is tasked with overseeing conditions in migrant detention centers, described in its audits that detainees had no substantive complaints and that facilities that were calm with no obvious indicators of high stress. The Nakamoto inspections, however, stand in stark contrast to what the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS) own inspector general has uncovered.
None of the detainees expressed any concerns about their treatment or safety, Nakamoto officials wrote in a March 2019 report on the Rio Grande Detention Center in Laredo, Texas. Detainees were satisfied with all conditions of their confinement.

Trump's attacks on Elijah Cummings are increasingly concerned with his committee's investigations
"Cummings should take his Oversight Committee and start doing oversight on Baltimore. He'd find out some real things."
Zack Ford

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has no strategy when it comes to racist attacks on Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and his home district, adding that Cummings, as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, should use his political power to investigate the city of Baltimore.
The House Oversight Committee is currently conducting multiple investigations into the Trump administration and has issued subpoenas for the presidents financial accounting documents, which he has so far rejected.
Trumps most recent comments come in the wake of multiple attacks on Cummings, who has criticized the administrations immigration policies and inhumane conditions inside migrant detention facilities at the southwest border. In retaliation for that criticism, Trump over the weekend slammed Cummings, calling his home district in Baltimore a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess, and questioning why any human would want to live there. Cummings West Baltimore district is majority-black, and the presidents comments were widely panned as racist.
During a rare second press appearance Tuesday afternoon, Trump was asked if he understood that Cummings was not the mayor of Baltimore and did not oversee the citys day to day issues. Ignoring the question, Trump pointed out that Cummings was one of the highest ranking politicians serving Baltimore and all the mayors who had been thrown out in recent years were friends of his, implying that Cummings himself was corrupt.

Republicans deploy a nasty bait-and-switch to save one of their worst gerrymanders
Why worry about the law when you control the courts?

The state of Michigan does not hold free and fair legislative elections. In 2018, Democratic state house and senate candidates received tens of thousands more votes than their Republican counterparts. Yet Republicans have solid majorities in both houses.
Meanwhile, the states congressional districts are so aggressively gerrymandered that, in 2012, when President Obama won the state by over nine points, Republicans still captured nine of Michigans 14 U.S. House seats.
All of this is supposed to change, however, and soon. In 2018, voters approved a state constitutional amendment providing that future legislative maps will be drawn by an independent commission. The members of this commission are chosen largely at random from a pool of applicants, in order to minimize either partys ability to capture the commission. People who recently served as partisan officials, party leaders, lobbyists, or other forms of political insiders may not serve on this commission.
That is, of course, unless the Republican Party gets its way in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday. The case is Daunt v. Benson.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson echoes and defends Trump's racist attacks on his 'infested'

HUD Secretary Ben Carson echoes and defends Trumps racist attacks on his infested hometown of Baltimore

The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson, has finally responded to President Donald Trumps racist attacks on his hometown of Baltimore, where he formerly served as Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Trump also has been attacking Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, whose district covers part of that city. Cummings is neither the mayor of Baltimore nor the governor of Maryland, but Baltimore does sit in the United States, of which Trump is president.
Secretary Carson, the only Black member of Trumps cabinet, echoed and defended his boss racist remarks, saying as a physician he hesitated to send his child patients back to their infested neighborhoods.
As a pediatric neurosurgeon, I spent many hours, sometimes operating all night long, trying to give children of Baltimore and other places around the world a second chance at life. And usually we were successful, Carson told Fox News host Tucker Carlson Monday, as The Washington Post reports.
Fox News showed Carson in front of a photo of the famous Lincoln Memorial, with the late president brightly lit up. They then quickly inserted video of an abandoned building in Baltimore, one that could easily exist in nearly any city in America.

Russian link between Trump and Brexit feared by FBI's McCabe and UK spy chief: report

The former FBI deputy director and his counterpart at the U.K.s MI5 intelligence agency privately shared concerns about the possible connections between the Brexit vote and Russias efforts to promote Donald Trumps campaign.
Andrew McCabe, then the second-ranking FBI official, and Jeremy Fleming, the second-ranking British intelligence agency official at the time, exchanged text messages revealing their mutual surprise at the result of the EU referendum that U.S. officials saw as a wake-up call, reported The Guardian.
A person familiar with the matter told the newspaper that American officials were wary of Russian interference in western elections, but some within the FBI saw the Brexit vote as confirmation that those efforts had been successful.
McCabe and Fleming frequently exchanged text messages starting in June 2016, shortly before the FBI opened its investigation into Trump campaign ties to Russia, but the conversations were cryptic and did not contain specific or sensitive materials, according to The Guardian.
