These Scientists Are Looking for "Glacier Blood"

ENVIRONMENT NOVEMBER 30, 2022

A red-tinged algae species may be accelerating snowmelt.

Jim Elser scanned the snowfields clinging to the lower slopes of Clements Mountain in Montana’s Glacier National Park. While nearby tourists snapped pictures of soaring rock faces and searched for wildlife, Elser, an ecologist at the University of Montana and the director of the Flathead Lake Biological Station, concentrated on just one thing: finding snow algae.

Elser and his research team tramped past flourishing purple asters and yellow arnica wildflowers, gaining elevation until they crested a ridge above a small basin. Marmot chirps replaced the sound of idling car engines at the Logan Pass parking lot, which swarmed with August visitors. A soft hum came from the bulky rectangular device strapped to the back of his colleague, Joe Giersch, an aquatic entomologist at the University of Montana; the device, a light-measuring tool, was warming up in preparation for the scientists’ data collection.

Then, from roughly 100 yards away, the three scientists noticed a faint blush on the slushy snow ahead. They beelined toward it.

Pence calls on Trump to apologize for dinner with antisemite

By JILL COLVIN and KEVIN FREKING
today

WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, criticized Donald Trump on Monday for dining with a Holocaust-denying white nationalist and the rapper formerly known as Kanye West days after launching his third campaign for the White House.

Pence, in an interview, called on Trump to apologize and said the former president had “demonstrated profoundly poor judgment” when he met last week at his Mar-a-Lago club with West, who is now known as Ye, as well as Nick Fuentes, a far-right activist with a long history of espousing antisemitic and white nationalist views.

The episode is serving as an early test of whether party leaders will continue to rally behind Trump as he embarks on yet another campaign for the White House after they have spent much of the last eight years being asked to respond to the controversies he’s created.

Mine opponents to ask Minnesota Supreme Court to void permit

By STEVE KARNOWSKI

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday on an attempt by environmental groups to cancel a key permit for a long-stalled copper-nickel mine.

Opponents of PolyMet Mining Corp.?s project say state regulators should have included “end-of-pipe” limits on discharges of mercury, sulfates and other pollutants in the water quality permit. They also say the state improperly tried to suppress the concerns of the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and PolyMet counter that the permit meets the legal requirements and that the project won’t violate clean water standards.

PolyMet plans to build the open pit mine near Babbitt and reuse a former iron ore processing plant a few miles away near Hoyt Lakes. The sites are in the upper St. Louis River watershed of northeastern Minnesota, which eventually flows into Lake Superior.

NATO renews membership vow to Ukraine, pledges arms and aid

By STEPHEN McGRATH, LORNE COOK and ELLEN KNICKMEYER

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — NATO doubled down Tuesday on its commitment to one day include Ukraine, a pledge that some officials and analysts believe helped prompt Russia’s invasion this year. The world’s largest security alliance also pledged to send more aid to Ukrainian forces locked in battle with Russian troops.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with NATO foreign ministers in Romania to drum up support for Ukraine as Russia bombards energy infrastructure going into the frigid winter. Russia cannot stop the alliance’s expansion, NATO leaders said.

“NATO’s door is open,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said before chairing the meeting in the capital, Bucharest.

'Purely Political': Judge Smacks Down Trump's Immunity Claim

There is going to be ketchup all over Mar-a-Lago's walls.

By Conover Kennard — November 29, 2022
Donald Trump is facing a lot of legal woes, including the Supreme Court's ruling that the former President will have to hand over his tax returns to a House committee that has been seeking them. And Republican-appointed appeals court judges didn't appear too keen on his latest bid to slow the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. On Monday, a federal judge ruled that Trump can't claim presidential immunity to avoid a lawsuit that accuses him of civil rights violations in his efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 election.

Via Bloomberg:

Trump had argued that he was "absolutely immune" from damages for actions within the "outer perimeter" of his official duties as President and that his post-election activities in 2020 were part of an effort to protect and defend the Constitution.

But US District Judge Emmet Sullivan in Washington agreed with the challengers -- the NAACP and Michigan voters and advocates -- that Trump's conduct was "purely political," according to the ruling.

SCOTUS Lawyer: Nope, No Ethical Problem Here!

Lawyer clutches pearls at the very idea?

By Susie Madrak — November 29, 2022

A lawyer for the Supreme Court stonewalled questions about ethics issues at the court in his reply to a letter from two top congressional Democrats. Via HuffPost:

Supreme Court legal counsel Ethan Torrey replied to the inquiry from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), each in charge of oversight of the courts in their respective chambers.

The two congressional investigators had pressed Chief Justice John Roberts to answer questions about how the court handles ethical breaches after news reports revealed a pressure campaign by the Christian conservative group Faith & Action that allegedly resulted in Justice Samuel Alito revealing the outcome of his 2014 decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby prior to its release.

Brutal St. Louis newspaper editorial pleads with Dems to save the country from GOP House 'toddlers'

By Tom Boggioni
Published November 28, 2022

According to the editorial board of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the current Democratic majority on the House has a duty to wrap up as much business as it can before the Republicans take over in January with their slim majority planning on launching multiple investigations of the Joe Biden administration instead of dealing with the country's needs.

In a word, the editors referred to the House Republicans under possible House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as "toddlers" who will require constant supervision.

Getting right to the point, the editors wrote, "Just as it’s a good idea to child-proof a home before having toddlers over for a birthday party, congressional Democrats should be doing what they can during the current lame-duck session to prepare for the incoming Republican House majority — a crowd that has literally announced its intention to threaten America’s fiscal stability, block election reforms and abandon Ukraine."

Arizona voter threatens 'violent revolution' and 'death penalty' at Maricopa election hearing

By David Edwards
Published November 28, 2022

An Arizona voter warned the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors that they could face the death penalty or a violent revolution due to perceived problems with the 2022 midterm elections.

Prior to certifying the 2022 election on Monday, the county Board of Supervisors listened to testimony from angry voters claiming the election had been stolen from some Republican candidates.

A woman named Kathy Roscoe told the supervisors that she came to the hearing "to get an up close and personal look at the seven traitors to the United States Constitution."

Does Marge Greene Answer Her Door With An AR-15?

White House bashes Marge's hateful response to Biden's assault ban remarks

By John Amato — November 28, 2022

During a Thanksgiving holiday riddled with horrific shootings, President Biden announced he still wants to sign into law a ban on high-powered weapons.

Marjorie Taylor Greene responded to the two mass shootings by bashing the Trans community and claiming she needs an AR-15 for home protection.

And just think the country will get two more years of this ........

The White House immediately singled out Marge's moronic and hateful diatribe on Twitter.

Republicans Called Them 'Witches,' Voters Call Them Winners

Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Attorney General Dana Nessel. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Winners.

By LeftJabber — November 22, 2022

In March 2021, Ron Weiser, co-chair of the Michigan GOP, addressed the Republican Club of Oakland County, not far from where I live.

It’s hard to overstate the lunacy of Michigan Republicans at that point, many of whom were up to their eyeballs in election denial, some of whom were suspects in election-related crimes, and sixteen of whom are now under federal investigation as fake electors.

But in his speech, Weiser — who had himself narrowly escaped being charged with campaign finance violations — decided to bring some snark:
