Why Bernie Sanders Is The Millennials' President Are you feelin the Bern?

Millennials, born somewhere between late 1980s and early 2000s, have reached a tipping point in society. As of this year we outnumber the baby boomers, meaning if we unite for a cause, we should get what we want. The 2016 presidential election is approaching, and whoever wins will be able to elect several supreme court members who will serve a lifetime position.

The trouble with people our age is the “uniting” part. We grew up hearing and seeing the hypocrisy of politicians, leaving us apathetic. We were promised a fulfilling life and job if we went to college and got a degree, but now that we're here, only 17% of us actually have jobs lined up upon graduation and we are burdened with an average student debt of $29,000 in Michigan alone.

Bernie Sanders wants to make four year public college and universities free, giving $70 million a year to replace the tuition students pay. Two-thirds of that money would come from the federal government (by imposing a tax on Wall Street investments) and the remaining one-third from the states. His legislation is modeled after systems in place in countries like Germany, Denmark and Sweden. By eliminating the burden of student debt, Sanders would open doors to a brighter future for more Americans.

Bernie Sanders' Southern Strategy

“I agreed wholeheartedly with the senator when he said the Democratic Party has abandoned the South.”
Ann Porter

“Global warming, it’s going to be disastrous,” one man at the event explained.

“Is climate change an issue? Is that not talked about here in Louisiana?” Sanders said. It’s not talked about, several people responded.

“We’re all gonna be under water,” one visibly concerned woman said. “No one can afford their flood insurance.”

“Oil and gas owns this state,” another woman shouted indignantly.

“Fracking,” another chimed in as though the word alone was self-explanatory.

The house party was the smallest of four events on the senator’s schedule in a two day swing through the state, which attracted Sanders’s usual sheaf of favorable media coverage. He made “a direct appeal to black voters” at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference gala in Baton Rouge on Saturday according to MSNBC, and “whipped up a thunderous crowd” of 4,500 in Kenner’s Pontchartrain Center according to the Times Picayune. (When I mentioned to Reed that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal only managed to draw 1,000 people to the same venue for his presidential announcement, she quipped “and he probably had to pay them to get them there.”)

Across the country,left-wing activists and veterans of the Occupy movement are organizing for Bernie

“The graduates of Occupy are now skilled organizers,” said Katherine Brezler, a Yonkers schoolteacher and national digital organizer at People for Bernie.

She said some of the core organizers at People For Bernie—a grassroots group unaffiliated with Sanders’s campaign that works to mobilize Sanders volunteers—first met in Zuccotti Park during the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests.

“After Occupy, people didn’t just go and sit in a hole,” Brezler said. “After Occupy, people became very involved in their communities and broadened their skill sets, broadened their networks, and now are revisiting a new campaign with revived interest in electoral politics because the candidate is speaking the language of their issues.”

There are numerous constituency groups in the People For Bernie family, said organizer Stan Williams. They range from those representing essential constituencies—including Women for Bernie, African Americans for Bernie, and Labor for Bernie—to slightly more niche groups (the Deadheads for Bernie Facebook page had 1,308 likes at press time). And they relish their independence from the official campaign.

Feeling the Bern! Thank you DU for giving me my hope back!!

I must admit my first post about Bernie Sanders was complaining he did not fight hard enough during the stolen election Ohio 2004.

Many Duers put me in my place and made me realize it was time to move on.

I was afraid to hope. I see that now.

We have just been burned so many times.

But this movement, this momentum.....It is Inspiring!

!Thank you most excellent DUers!

And anyone know where we can find some "Feel the Bern' T-shirts and bumper stickers?

The Black Lives Matter protest and absurd response by supporters of other candidates seems to fit the definition.

For G.O.P., Pope Francis’ Visit to Congress Comes With Tensions

The pope’s visit comes with inherent tension for many Republicans, including those who are Catholic. While he has made no changes in church doctrine, Francis has forcefully staked out ideological ground opposite that of Mr. Boehner and his party. He has excoriated the excesses of capitalism as the “dung of the devil,” pleaded for action to stop global warming and enthusiastically supported the new nuclear accord with Iran.

For Republicans, fiscal issues are more immediate and problematic. They are pushing for spending cuts, including ones that would reduce funding for the poor, setting up a fight with Democrats that could lead to a government shutdown around the time of the pope’s remarks, which will be broadcast live from the West Front of the Capitol.

Many Republican leaders have been quietly discussing their fears of a spending fight or government shutdown during his visit. “That would be awful,” said Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine and a Catholic. “My hope is that we will all be infused with the spirit of St. Francis,” she added, suggesting that Congress would perhaps be moved to agree on some appropriation bills to avoid embarrassment.

For all the potential tension, Mr. Boehner remains thrilled, shelving ideological differences to honor Francis, who might sound to most Americans more like Bernie Sanders than Ronald Reagan.
