'Making Money Off Dysfunction': Bolstering Medicare for All Case, Survey Shows Americans Accrued $88 Billion in Healthcare Debt in 2018

From the article:

Americans borrowed $88 billion in 2018 to cover their healthcare, putting yet another number to the argument against the private insurance system as the best provider of care and making the case for universal healthcare even stronger.
That's not all. 45% of U.S. adults fear a health issue could push them into bankruptcy—and 15 million Americans delayed purchasing medication to save money last year.
"Someone is making money off dysfunction," said New York Times editor Patrick LaForge.

The US healthcare system prioritizes profits over people.

As long as for-profit businesses are allowed to dictate what can be done, and the limits of what can be done, the dysfunction will continue.

And people will die because of this dysfunction, and so that the 1% can further profit at our expense.

'Solitary Confinement Is Torture': Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Chelsea Manning's Release

From the article:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday demanded the release of U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning and called for a ban on extended solitary confinement.
"Chelsea Manning has been trapped in solitary confinement for refusing to answer questions before a Grand Jury," tweeted the congresswoman from New York. "Solitary confinement is torture. Chelsea is being tortured for whistleblowing, she should be released on bail, and we should ban extended solitary in the U.S."

NIH Director Francis Collins on why Christians must reconcile with science

From the article:

On top of his duties as the director of the National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins takes time to answer letters from Christians trying to reconcile their faith with science....

A renowned geneticist, Collins is recognized in faith circles not only for his scientific accomplishments — among them piloting the Human Genome Project — but for his seemingly unshakable faith in God.
That dedication to Christianity has earned him star power among a segment of evangelicals who are eager for a more nuanced approach to science — one that accepts the findings of evolution, for example, and also regards the Bible as a source of ultimate authority.

What percent of DUers have a defined benefit pension plan?

There is an excellent current post:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211977844

It speaks to the fact that a huge number of US workers do not, and may never have, sufficient money to retire.

So, I ask, how many of you have a defined benefit pension plan?

A defined benefit plan is one in which the recipient is guaranteed a certain benefit.

MeToo and how we respond to it.

There are quite a few current threads, all discussing various aspects of behavior that we, as voters, might expect of candidates.

What is disheartening is to see how many responses illustrate exactly why so many female victims are so reluctant to speak of allegations of abuse. Why so many female victims spoke of dreading the publicity, and the expected response to their allegations against a prominent and powerful (generally) male.

The questioning of motivation. Why did the alleged victim wait?

The attempt at showing how many other candidates did, or were accused of, the same behavior.

And perhaps worst of all, in my view, the focus on winning above all else.

Yes, Trump is a monster, and totally incompetent, and a sexual predator. And we need to defeat him, and ruin him legally through the Judicial process.

But what does MeToo really mean to us if we so easily ignore what we have learned about the problem?

How not to pray in a statehouse

From the article:

A small viral tempest blew up this past week after a Pennsylvania state representative opened the legislative session with a prayer that was, shall we say, far from the usual exercise in spiritual inclusion. First-term Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R- Centre/Clinton) invoked Jesus’ name 13 times in a way that seemed designed to send a message to Movita Johnson-Harrell, who after a special election in Philadelphia was about to be sworn in as the first Muslim woman to serve in the Pennsylvania legislature....

OK. Like it or not, American politicians have, since the beginning of the republic, invoked the Deity when engaged in civil religious discourse. But since the founding fathers, they have habitually steered clear of Jesus’ name.
The Declaration of Independence does not mention Jesus, but “nature’s God,” “Creator,” and “the Supreme Judge of the world.” Abraham Lincoln put “under God,” not “under Jesus,” in the Gettysburg Address. Periodic attempts in Congress to amend the Constitution to recognize the law and authority of Jesus Christ (most recently in the early 1950s) have always gone nowhere....
