elmac's JournalSwitzerland 'rejects basic income', poll projections suggest
Source: BBC
Some 78% of voters opposed the plan, a GFS projection for Swiss TV suggested.
The proposal had called for adults to be paid an unconditional monthly income, whether they worked or not.
Supporters said since work was increasingly automated, fewer jobs were available for workers. Switzerland is the first country to hold such a vote.
No figure for the basic income had been set, but those behind the proposal suggested a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs (£1,755; $2,555) for adults and SFr625 for each child, reflecting the high cost of living in Switzerland. It is not clear how it would affect people on higher salaries.
There was little support among Swiss politicians for the idea and not a single parliamentary party has come out in favour, but the proposal gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was therefore put to the vote under the Swiss popular initiative system.
Critics of the measure say that disconnecting the link between work done and money earned would be bad for society.

A clip from the Movie Lincoln with Daniel Day-Lewis superbly playing the part of Lincoln
I watched this movie tonight and highly recommend it. Was thinking about how the party of Lincoln has disintegrated to the point it is today. Imagine a debate, Trump VS Lincoln, or Cruz VS Lincoln.

Flint Water Crisis: Three to Face Criminal Charges — Sources
Source: NBC News
As many as three Michigan officials will face criminal charges Wednesday in connection with lead contamination in Flint's municipal water system, multiple government sources said Tuesday.
The sources told NBC News and NBC station WDIV of Detroit that state Attorney General Bill Schuette will announce criminal charges against two employees of the state Department of Environmental Quality and one who works for the City of Flint.
The attorney general's office gave no official indication Tuesday what it would discuss at Wednesday's news conference, where it said Schuette would make a "significant announcement." Among those scheduled to be at the news conference are the Genesee County prosecutor and the chief investigators for the state's Flint water task force.

Bernie Sanders: Hillary Clinton is not 'qualified' to be president
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton was not "qualified" to be president, an escalation in rhetoric between the two Democratic presidential candidates.
"She has been saying lately that I am 'not qualified' to be president. Well let me just say in response to Secretary Clinton: I don't believe that she is qualified if she is through her super PAC taking tens of millions of dollars in special interest funds," he told a crowd in Philadelphia.
Sanders added that Clinton was similarly unqualified because of her positions on the Iraq War and trade agreements.

Obama to designate new national monuments in the California desert
Source: Washington Post
President Obama has set aside more of Americas lands and waters for conservation protection than any of his predecessors, and he is preparing to do even more before he leaves office next year. The result may be one of the most expansive environmental and historic-preservation legacies in presidential history.
On Friday, Obama will designate more than 1.8 million acres of California desert for protection with the creation of three national monuments: Castle Mountains, Mojave Trails and Sand to Snow. The new monuments will connect three existing sites Death Valley and Joshua Tree national parks and the Mojave National Preserve to create the second-largest desert preserve in the world.
Obama has unilaterally protected more than 260 million acres of Americas lands and waters under the Antiquities Act of 1906, which gives the president wide latitude to safeguard at-risk federal lands that have cultural, historic or scientific value.
The act is among the most powerful tools at any presidents disposal. Franklin D. Roosevelt invoked the law more than any president in history; Harold L. Ickes, his interior secretary, kept a pile of potential national-monument declarations in a desk and pulled them out whenever Roosevelt was in a good mood.
