Super Tuesday: Clinton, Trump Look To Pull Away From Rivals

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are eyeing an opportunity to pull away from their rivals on Super Tuesday, a delegate-rich dash across the country that could accelerate their march toward the general election.

Voters from Vermont to Colorado, Alaska to American Samoa and a host of states in between were heading to polling places and caucus sites on the busiest day of the 2016 primaries.

The contests come at a turbulent moment for Republicans as they grapple with the prospect of Trump becoming the party's nominee. Rivals Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are engaged in a frantic effort to stop the billionaire - with Rubio in particular lobbing surprisingly personal attacks - but it was unclear whether they'd made their move too late.

Trump said his support crossed party lines and has even brought Democrats into the GOP.

"We're getting people into the party that they've never had before," he told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "I can tell you the one person Hillary Clinton doesn't want to run against is me." Like Trump, Clinton has won three of the four early voting contests, including a thrashing of rival Bernie Sanders in South Carolina on Saturday. Her victory there was due to overwhelming support from black voters, putting her in position for a strong showing in several Southern states with large African-American electorates that vote Tuesday.

The Latest: Saudi FM Says Syrian Forces Violating Cease-Fire

Source: Associated Press

BEIRUT (AP) -- The Latest on the conflict in Syria as a fragile cease-fire enters its second day (all times local):

7:45 p.m.

A top official with the Syrian opposition has blamed the government and its allies for cease-fire violations that killed more than two dozen people, warning it will be difficult to resume peace talks next month.

Raid Hijab, who heads the High Negotiations Committee, an umbrella for opposition and rebel factions, said in a statement directed to U.N. chief Ban Ki-Moon Sunday that Russian, Iranian and government forces have not stopped hostilities since the truce went into effect Friday at midnight.

The truce was brokered by Russia and the U.S.

Hijab said there have been 24 cases of shelling and five cases of ground attacks. He said Russian warplanes carried out 26 airstrikes on Sunday alone targeting rebels that are abiding by the truce.

A Sincere Congratulations On South Carolina, DU Hillary Supporters.

Wow. HRC absolutely ran away with it tonight. 73% to 26%. One of the widest margins in history. This is a serious post. The main reason I am posting this is because I am ashamed and disgusted by some of the filth spewed by my fellow Bernie supporters on DU. In fact, today on one of my OPs someone said that they would "rather see Trump in the White House than Clinton." I alerted and fortunately a sensible jury voted to hide as it was a clear TOS violation. These past few weeks I've been quite a pain in the ass to fellow Bernie supporting DUers. I've most definitely shot down more posts from other Bernie supporters than any other group. Even yesterday, I sent an alert to the administrators about a post that compared Hillary to Hitler. (Thats right, Hitler! ) Unlike some of my peers, my support for Bernie does NOT come with hatred for Hillary. I love Hillary, always have. I support Bernie, I adore Bernie, but I still love Hillary. I would be happy with her in the WH. Now I won't gloss over the fact that I have some policy disagreements with her, but thats not what this post is about. I would like to formally apologize on the behalf of the Bernie supporters that spew ridiculous, disgusting, and sometimes just plain stupid garbage on this site. Congrats on South Carolina and see you on Super Tuesday, Good Luck!

Clinton Eyes Big Win In South Carolina; Sanders Shifts Focus

Source: Associated Press

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Hillary Clinton hoped to cement her position as the Democratic front-runner with a big win in Saturday's South Carolina presidential primary, while rival Bernie Sanders moved on before the votes were even counted to focus on next week's Super Tuesday contests.

The Democrats' contrasting approaches underscored their broader aims and possibilities heading into the delegate-rich March 1 races. Clinton is looking to win by large margins in Southern states with large black populations, while Sanders wants to score victories in the Midwest and Northeast and stay close to Clinton in the South to avoid a blowout in the delegate race.

As Democrats in South Carolina were heading to the polls, Sanders was speaking to about 10,000 people at a Formula One racetrack near Austin, Texas.

"On Super Tuesday the state that is going to be voting for the most delegates is the great state of Texas," he said. "If all of you come out to vote and you bring your friends and your neighbors and your co-workers, we are going to win here in Texas."
