KY..........
June 12, 2020

Finally got out and went to Lowes today. Was very disappointed.

Had few necessities for plumbing repair and wanted to pick up a few flowers for out front of our house. This is in north central Kentucky. I'm a 72YO male and high risk.

Despite all their hoopla on their web site about employee and customer safety, when I went in you would never guess there's a global pandemic happening at all.

* Only a small percentage of staff were wearing masks or practicing social distancing. Checkout clerk had no mask, eye protection or barrier shield.
* No social distancing signs as shown on web site and no directional aisle signs.
* The only indication of any concern whatsoever was an occasional goofy "we care" recording on the PA.

I was also shocked at how careless so many customers were although there was a higher percentage of customers wearing masks then Lowes employees, although most with masks were older folks like me. I sensed a low percentage of both customers and employees having concerns for social distancing.

So, after returning home, I wanted to raise some hell with Lowes about their disregard for safety. Although it was hard finding an email address for them, I finally found one on their corporate site. I'm writing them a nasty-gram tonight to outline my observations and to let them know I won't return under those conditions.

Earlier in the day, my son went to Kroger for our biweekly grocery run. Our store is roughly 5-miles from that Lowes store. The Kroger store requires customers to wear masks in order to enter and he said almost 100% of employees wore masks. They have directional aisle markers and cashiers have barrier shields.

What a contrast and what an unnerving experience for me.......

Any suggestions on anything special to tell Lowes in my email will be appreciated.

Meet the woman who filmed her mom's reaction to law school acceptance to show 'black joy'
Melinda Oliver said her journey to law school "was not the smoothest," but that her mom, Linda, had been with her "every step of the way."

Melinda Oliver had been refreshing her email routinely for the past few days, waiting on a notification that might change her life.

When she didn't receive an email by 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, however, she decided to take her dog for a walk. She figured the business day was nearly over and that she probably wouldn't be hearing from DePaul University College of Law that day.

She was proven wrong when 15 minutes later the message finally arrived. She braced herself as she opened the email, but she hadn't needed to. Oliver had not only been accepted to the program, but she had been awarded an annual $40,000 scholarship in recognition of her "achievements, personal qualities and potential to contribute to the DePaul community."

"I called my sister, huffing and puffing and immediately she asked me, 'what's wrong?'" Oliver said. "I told her nothing was wrong, but that I'd been accepted to law school with a scholarship and I was overwhelmed."

If you need to see a little black joy, please watch my moms reaction when I told her I got into law school with a $40,000 annual scholarship

Nothing better than watching the joy of a mother seeing her child succeed in life. Congratulations to Melinda and her mom!

'A predator of the worst kind’: PIU investigation launched after sexual assault claims made against officer involved in death of Breonna Taylor
WAVE TV (Louisville)

(snips)
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - One of the three officers under investigation in the death of Breonna Taylor is now also being investigated for sexual assault, according to LMPD. A WAVE 3 Troubleshooter Investigation found Detective Brett Hankison never entered Breonna Taylor’s apartment, but fired through a window with the shades drawn. As that investigation reaches the FBI, Hankison is at the center of a completely different case.

Stories have been posted to social media of young women trying to make their way home from St. Matthews bars at night. They say Hankison approached them in uniform and in his marked car to offer them a safe ride home. One woman claims Hankison rubbed her thigh, kissed her forehead, and called her baby while driving her home in his unit.

The woman quoted above is one of the first women to post her story involving Hankison online, alleging he gave her a ride home, invited himself inside of her apartment and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. Her statement says “he used his uniform to stalk women at local bars and sexually assault them” knowing “his badge would keep them quiet.”

She claims there are many women who have similar stories and they all blamed themselves for Hankison’s alleged actions who were too scared to report a police officer and unsure of how to go about it.

Second story from today relating to the Breonna Taylor case:

Breonna Taylor: Detective who applied for warrant placed on leave

(snips)
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Interim LMPD Chief Rob Schroeder said Wednesday that the detective who applied for the warrant that led officers to the home of Breonna Taylor has been placed on administrative reassignment.

Narcotics officers served the no-knock warrant at Taylor’s home on March 13. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, told police he fired his gun once toward the ground when he saw the door being rammed open, not knowing it was officers.

The officers returned a barrage of gunfire, striking Taylor and leaving her dying on the floor of her hallway.

Schroeder said Det. Joshua James has been placed on administrative reassignment. The interim chief said Taylor’s family, their attorneys and even the postal inspector have questioned the reason behind the warrant.

Chickens are finally coming home to roost for cops here in Louisville and the victims are all singing off the same page.

Thanks goodness that wall of fear is finally falling.

A Florida man, to boot. Here's the story from a local source (Star Tribune)

I’m still proud of him, whether he burned down the police station or not. He didn’t hurt nobody, did he?”

First hearing for arson suspect in Minneapolis Third Precinct case
Another hearing was scheduled for Thursday to determine if Branden M. Wolfe, 23, will be eligible for release.

Branden M. Wolfe, 23, admitted to authorities that he was involved in the fire that heavily damaged the Third Precinct building following the May 25 death of George Floyd while in police custody, according to a criminal complaint. It says Wolfe also acknowledged he stole equipment from the building, some of which was recovered from his person and his apartment. Thus far, he is charged only with aiding and abetting arson.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Hildy Bowbeer found that Wolfe qualifies for a free federal defender. Prosecutors asked that he be held in jail pending further hearings. A hearing was scheduled for Thursday to determine if Wolfe will be eligible for release.

But here's the big one on this asshole.....

Wolfe admitted to being inside the Third Precinct the night of the arson, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in St. Paul. He took property from the building and pushed a wooden barrel into the fire, the complaint says. Wolfe also identified himself in several photographs depicting him in front of the Third Precinct building holding a police baton, with smoke and flames visible in the background, the complaint says.
+++
Law enforcement later recovered from Wolfe’s apartment additional items belonging to the Minneapolis Police Department, including a riot helmet, a 9mm pistol magazine, a police radio and a police-issued overdose kit.
+++
Wolfe’s father, Robert Wolfe of Macon, Ga., said he knew nothing of his son’s legal troubles or his political leanings. He said his son was raised by his mother and home-schooled in a suburb of Pensacola, Fla. “He has grandiose ideas, a lot of them … and zero common sense,” Robert Wolfe said.

As for the alleged arson, he said, “I’m still proud of him, whether he burned down the police station or not. He didn’t hurt nobody, did he?” Branden Wolfe has split time recently between Florida and the Twin Cities, where he has lived for about a year and where he and woman have a toddler daughter, his father said.

No wonder this guy is a wreck, with a father like that.

Now, there's a wife or girl friend and little girl to suffer along with his riot victims.

Florida boy, Florida daddy. We know Scott and DeSantis are so proud......

Rally in Delhi draws hundreds 'Honoring Black Lives'

Several demonstrators confronted a counter-protestor, a MAGA hat-wearing white man toting a poster claiming “Black Lives Matter causes more deaths” and challenging protesters to “convince me I’m wrong.” The man, who refused to identify himself, threatened to hit Gilbertsville resident Diana Degarmo in a confrontation de-escalated by other demonstrators. “Some woman grabbed his sign and he thought it was me, so he threatened to hit me,” she said.

The altercation transpired in front of Xavier Temple, a 9-year-old black Delhi resident who cried in fear. Fellow Delhi resident Will Kleisner immediately knelt beside Xavier, comforting him and assuring him that there were more good people present than bad.

“I wanted to share with my friend why we’re all here and why people like that aren’t going to be around too much longer,” Kleisner said. “Kids like him and kids like me are here to stop that kind of ignorance and hatred and make the world a better place for my kids, for his kids, for his generation, for my little brother.”

Xavier’s mother, Trista, said the incident illustrated the importance of bringing her son and his sister, 7-year-old Phoenix, to such demonstrations.

I have not yet found a video of this incident but here's a photo from the petition and another from the news article:

Judge orders Bolsonaro to resume publishing Brazil Covid-19 data

Judge orders Bolsonaro to resume publishing Brazil Covid-19 data

A Brazilian supreme court judge has ordered Jair Bolsonaro’s administration to resume publishing complete Covid-19 statistics after moves to suppress such information prompted accusations of authoritarian skulduggery designed to cover up the crisis.

The Brazilian government sparked outrage on Saturday by purging the health ministry website of historical data relating to the pandemic and announcing it would stop publishing the cumulative death toll or number of infections.
+++
On Monday night, supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes reportedly gave Bolsonaro’s administration a 48-hour deadline to begin releasing the full figures again each day, after a legal challenge from two opposition parties.

Randolfe Rodrigues, the opposition leader in the senate, celebrated the move. “The government will now be obliged to release the pandemic data, as before, without make-up or manipulation,” the senator tweeted.

Good, lets see how they respond. It's a damn shame humanity can't get along with unity so that all nations openly publish their data, collect data on the same basis and format, and provide it in a timely fashion to a central agency.

Buffalo and New York speak up and say Trump is wrong.

Trump, without evidence, claims Gugino 'could be an ANTIFA provocateur'

Told of Trump's tweet, Victoria Ross, executive director of the Western New York Peace Center, was aghast. "Oh, that's ridiculous," said Ross, who has known Gugino for years. "They are just plain making things up."
+++
The reporter on the OANN piece was Kristian Rouz -- who, according to the Daily Beast, also works for the Russian propaganda outfit Sputnik.
+++
Ross said Gugino is a longtime peace activist from Amherst and a devotee of the Catholic Worker Movement, a social justice effort launched during the Great Depression by activist Dorothy Day. "He is devoted to nonviolence," Ross said.
+++
"#MartinGugino is a peace activist and volunteer with the Catholic Worker movement. Why spread rumors about someone who embodies the Beatitudes?" tweeted Rev. James Martin, a prominent Jesuit priest. "This is sick," tweeted Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul. "The President continues to use his platform to peddle conspiracy theories, this time about a peaceful protester and fellow New Yorker. Not sure how this is supposed to bring our country together..."

Who is Martin Gugino? Here's what we know

"He’s a gentle person who really believes that he must stand up for what he thinks is right," said his friend Terrence Bisson, who has worked with Gugino on Latin American issues through the Western New York Peace Center.

"That’s why he went to the demonstration. He would never resist physically any kind of orders," Bisson told The Buffalo News Friday. "He’s a bit frail, not because of his age. He has some health problems."

It annoys me to now end that media and politicians cannot come clean and simply say Trump is a liar. What the hell are they afraid of?
