Sen. Tammy Baldwin's (D-Wis.) Republican midterm challenger slammed the senator for staying silent on CIA director nominee Gina Haspel's confirmation process on Wednesday, saying in a press release that Baldwin was on "Team Terrorist."

The press release from Republican Senate hopeful Leah Vukmir included a graphic with Vukmir and Haspel, with the caption "Team America," while Baldwin's picture appears alongside a picture of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

“Like many Americans, I understand the urgency that drove the decision to resort to so-called enhanced interrogation methods after our country was attacked. I know that those who used enhanced interrogation methods and those who approved them wanted to protect Americans from harm. I appreciate their dilemma and the strain of their duty. But as I have argued many times, the methods we employ to keep our nation safe must be as right and just as the values we aspire to live up to and promote in the world.

“I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense. However, Ms. Haspel’s role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing. Her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying. I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination.”

Iran’s supreme leader denounced President Donald Trump on Wednesday over his decision to pull America out of the 2015 nuclear deal, while lawmakers lit a paper U.S. flag on fire inside parliament, shouting, “Death to America!”

In comments before school teachers, Khamenei told Trump: “You cannot do a damn thing!” The exhortation from Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, follows a pattern of Iranian leaders declaring their nation’s ability to resist foreign pressure or interference. “The body of this man, Trump, will turn to ashes and become the food of the worms and ants, while the Islamic Republic continues to stand,” Khamenei said.

The damage will not be contained. Losing our credibility is just the start. More consequently, we lose control. The United States no longer enjoys exceptional leverage over international institutions. We can no longer convince countries merely on the weight of our words. We can no longer claim to lead by example. Millions may follow Donald Trump on Twitter, few leaders will follow his lead.

Other powers will fill the void. Europe, Russia, and China will try to shore up the deal. If they succeed it will show how diminished our standing has become. If they fail, it will accelerate Moscow and Beijing’s plans to dismantle the post-war world order and more aggressively assert their international influence. Today marks the end of an American era and the beginning of an era governed by uncertainty and instability. Donald Trump surrendered American exceptionalism.

What happens now? We will continue to act like a nation that still believes it commands great international influence. Democrats will tell voters that electing them can restore our global leadership. The hard truth is that once gone, it’s not easily restored. We filled in some of the holes punctured through the damn during the second Bush presidency. Yet, he never challenged the core traditions of American power. I believe that Donald Trump has damaged it beyond repair.

President Trump on Wednesday threatened to revoke press credentials from the “fake news” networks after a report study showed 91 percent of Trump’s coverage in the press is negative. Fox & Friends reported Wednesday morning on a Media Research Center report that showed 91 percent of the coverage surrounding Trump in the first four months of 2018 has been negative, despite a CNN poll that most voters’ approval of Trump has been increasing.

The Media Research Center was founded by right wing extremist Brent Bozell, who is most infamous here for calling President Obama a “skinny ghetto crackhead” during an appearance on Fox News.
