David Hogg: They've Tried To Kill Me Seven Times

“In the past year, there have been seven assassination attempts. But I also realize, if they kill me, that’s probably the stupidest thing they could do to try to end the movement. Because that would make it even more successful in the end. Because it would invigorate us and create f—ing change. Honestly, I realize that it’s horrible that I have to live through this, and it is traumatizing. But you eventually become desensitized to it.

“Like, oh, your house got SWAT-ted. You got a call from the police saying someone said that everyone in your family had been killed and that you are being held hostage for $100,000. Right? That becomes part of daily life. It’s just something that you have to get through. But I mean, what am I going to do? Stop?” – Parkland activist David Hogg, speaking to the Washington Post.

The Politics of Paranoia in the Far Right World of Trump.

You know the poem? History repeats itself. Has to. No-one Listens, (Steve Turner) well, never is a truer word spoken when the far right gets a whiff of power and so we witness the present far right implementing strategies from the playbook of yester year Nazi's.

Fifty years ago Professor Hofstadter coined the phrase ‘The Paranoid Style’ to describe the type of politics that Trump so gleefully engages with:

I call it the paranoid style simply because no other word adequately evokes the sense of heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy that I have in mind. In using the expression “paranoid style” I am not speaking in a clinical sense, but borrowing a clinical term for other purposes……. In fact, the idea of the paranoid style as a force in politics would have little contemporary relevance or historical value if it were applied only to men with profoundly disturbed minds. It is the use of paranoid modes of expression by more or less normal people that makes the phenomenon significant

Donald Trump gets his support, in the main, from white, native born, working class men, who don’t have a lot of education and who feel that they have been marginalised by the rapid economic changes of the last few decades. If you look back through history it seems that this is the go-to co-hort, if you want to stoke up fear and irrational thought. Fear of change and fear of other is the natural bed fellow of some communities who feel that their way of life is under threat. The Politics of Paranoia plays into and stokes those fears, always to the advantage of the politician, rather than to the advantage of those left trembling with fear and anger from the rhetoric they have been exposed to.

One could argue that in any political system – in any Western country – there is a degree of paranoia in the body politic. However, it is about degree, relativism and application. Going to back to the Middle Ages people have used fear of other to control the narrative, along with using paranoia to normalise persecution. In the American tradition we need look no further than McCarthy or Goldwater, and the irrational stoking of fear against other – even though the other was the chap next door – to see how the politics of paranoia can work.

Trump is a master of this style, maybe because he is not playing in quite the same way. Maybe because there is real paranoia there? Either way, he is a real and present danger to the mental well being of the planet..

GOOD GRIEF...One-Third Back Preemptively Nuking North Korea

The Hill reports:

More than 1 in 3 Americans would back a preemptive nuclear strike on North Korea if the nation tested a missile capable of reaching the U.S., according to a poll conducted by YouGov and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

“For many of these hawks, support for an attack, even in a preventive war, does not significantly decrease when the story says that the United States would use nuclear weapons that are expected to kill 1 million North Korean civilians,” researchers wrote.

The poll also found that while only 33 percent of respondents would prefer a nuclear strike that killed as many as 15,000 civilians, 50 percent would approve if one actually occurred. Fewer respondents said they would approve such a strike if it only had a 50-50 chance of preventing retaliation.

Why It Matters How Powerful Men Treat Women

Here’s what’s happening: All across the English-speaking world, men seeking or established in high office, icons of elitist entitlement shotgun-married to rank populism, are having to answer questions about just how much violence they have chosen to inflict on the women around them. And all across the English-speaking world, their supporters are rallying behind them.
-----------
Male violence at the highest levels of government has been tolerated for a very long time. Unfortunately for these men, women are no longer quite so willing to keep their mouths shut about it as they once were. This means that even voters who don’t really care about male politicians assaulting women know that on some level they should care, which is why so many double down on frantic excuses. Meanwhile, the accused themselves behave as though accountability is for the little people.
-----------
Let’s be honest with ourselves for a second, here. Let’s admit that nobody votes for a Trump or a Johnson believing their candidate to be a sincere and morally upstanding specimen of humanity. All that is required from these spoiled thugs is all that has ever been required of them: the absolute bare minimum of plausible deniability, just enough of a flimsy fig leaf for browbeaten gatekeepers to feel OK about letting them off the hook, like they were always going to, whether the offense is a hilarious, totally innocuous—definitely not racist—crack about Africans or, you know, raping someone in a changing room.

Until we #CloseTheCamps, I really don't care about #BeBest, do u?

7 year olds, caked w/snot and tears, care for infants they’ve just met. Toddlers without diapers are relieving themselves in their pants. Teen mothers' clothes are stained with breast milk. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/21/us/migrant-children-border-soap.html

At this point it is just insulting....
