"Some people think Brexit supporters are stupid, well I don't think they're stupid I just think they voted to leave the EU, cos they don't like people from Pakistan". Frankie Boyle

Oh. My. Days. This is what the UK has become. That one of these far right, culture war baiting, free marketeer, corporation tax cutting, deregulators IS going to be the next Prime Minister tells you everything you need to know about post Brexit Britain. Entering terminal decline stage.

Australian passing through US asked if she had an abortion and then deported - report

The 31-year-old alleged that after being patted down, fingerprinted and photographed, one of the US border security officials asked her whether she was pregnant.

“She was walking me from one room to the next, and she asked the pregnancy question again,” Ms Gourley said. “I don’t know if she had forgotten, or she wanted to work out if I was lying or something. I said no, and she looked at me again and said, ‘Have you recently had an abortion?’

that to my situation?’”

Subsequently, she was informed that she would not be allowed in the country as she had breached the visa waiver programme.

A spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection told the outlet that the visa waiver programme prohibited applicants from engaging “in any type of employment or get compensation for services rendered”.

If anti-abortion ideologues truly cared about the lives of babies...

Graphic mine

Says it all really - but of course as it is all about patriarchal power and far right toxicity they will never give a shit about the born. Compassion and charity is not their thing, not their thing at all... there is no hate quite like christofacist love...

To be fair though would you want any of the 400000 kids in the care system be subject to that? Shudder

The Tories are tearing themselves apart in the leadership race to replace BoJo & I am here for that

Highlights mine

THE UK TORY LEADERHIP RACE IS
The Tories are tearing themselves apart in the leadership race to replace BoJo and I am here for that.

BUT it is not funny really, not funny at all. To a one they have propped up a toxic, vile administration that has done much to strip away our civil rights, break international law and turn us from a serious country on the world stage to a laughing stock.

We are in a time of post Covid economic crisis made much worse than that of our Europeans and American cousins because of the economic self harm caused by Brexit. We have a soaring cost of living crisis, with fuel bills rising at a staggering rate, with the average household expecting to pay circa $5000 per year by February. Inflation is in double digits. Wages are stagnating. People are choosing between heating and eating. Sterling is weaker than a weak mans weak things. Taxes are on the rise and those that are running for office are completely out of touch with this reality. The Tories have relied on their massive majority in the House to bounce through any legislation they want and I do not think that any of it, literally any of it, has been about reform or improvement for the wider community -too busy sending refugees to Rwanda, making protests illegal and stripping us of our Bill of Human Rights.

The big takeaway in the race so far for me, when people are REALLY struggling, is the popular theme amongst the candidates to reduce corporation tax from 25% to 15%... yep, that is the plan, make businesses richer, while people truly and desperately struggle during a period of stagnation and an expected incoming recession. So while it is going to be fun watching the toxics tear each other apart over the next couple of weeks, it is not really funny at all. BoJo has gone, but with this lot running to replace him, his legacy will endure.

We are not out of the danger zone. Not even a little bit. We need an early general election. Stat.

Right now in the UK

Positive thoughts please that by the a.m. Boris Johnson is in our rear view mirror. Right now with only 20% support from the Parliamentary Party he is refusing to fuck off. He is going down of course but as his sycophants fight like hell to get into the lifeboats (too little too late) he is trying to fuck everyone over as he sinks. Fighting to the death, but he will have to go.

Florida's 'don't say gay' law may sound vague - but its purpose is clear

What does that vague wording mean, exactly? Since heterosexuality is a sexual orientation, does the new law mean a straight teacher can’t mention their spouse? Since discussing gender identity is banned, will students be prohibited from referring to anyone as ‘he’ or ‘she’? Will teachers have to drop gendered honorifics like Mr, Mrs or Miss?

No, of course not. The bill wasn’t designed to be applied with any sort of consistency. It was designed to do one thing and one thing only: terrorize LGBTQ+ people. Like Texas’s abortion bounty law, the don’t say gay bill gives parents the power to levy lawsuits against teachers or schools they believe contravene the deliberately broad law. The threat of being hit with a costly lawsuit means that it’s likely underfunded school districts will err on the side of caution and ask teachers to avoid saying or doing anything that could be possibly be construed as queer. Indeed, lawyers have already told teachers in Orange county public schools that they should be careful not to wear rainbows; avoid mentioning same-sex spouses or displaying any pictures of them; and ensure they remove safe-space stickers from their classroom doors. So there you go: the party that professes to love free speech and small government has pushed through a law that means a rainbow sticker could end a teacher’s career.

Emphasis mine

And this is just the start right? Horrid. Just horrid.

DeSantis, a despot in the making, is playing the far-right card very well. He will continue to encroach on the rights of women, entrapping women further and endangering LGBTQI+ communities and children in the cray cray culture wars. This don’t say gay bill will inevitably negatively impact the learning experiences of Florida’s children (maybe that is the point) because intelligent, skilled teachers won't give in to his nasty homophobic oppression and will vote with their feet.

And this is the man Republicans will want to put in the most powerful position in the world. Good grief.
