Republicans leap to Kavanaugh's defense, but drag their feet on Violence Against Women Act

While Senate Republicans are working overtime to move Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination forward despite sexual assault allegations, the Violence Against Women Act is due to expire in nine days if Congress doesn’t act. Hmmm, what do those two things have in common?

Let’s throw in one more thread: A group of former staffers is calling out Congress for its failure to pass a new sexual harassment policy. Both the House and the Senate have passed bills to address the issue, but they haven’t sorted out their differences and sent a final bill to the groper-in-chief for his signature. Now they say that “probably” won’t happen until after November’s elections.

The Violence Against Women Act, meanwhile, may get kicked down the road by being included in the short-term spending bill to keep the government open. The Senate included a VAWA extension in the bill it passed on Tuesday. In the House, Republicans have proposed a six-month VAWA extension, but it doesn’t just fail to improve the law as advocates had hoped—it eliminates some provisions of the current law. And again, it’s nine days until the law expires and even a short-term reauthorization is still up in the air.

Piers Morgan's campaign for men is straight out of the MRA and incel playbooks

Lads lads lads, watch out. I don’t know if you’ve heard the news, but feminists have “over-egged the souffle in [their] kitchens”, (that’s where women belong amirite?) and “decided to criminalise the word man”. This is according to Piers Morgan, anyway, who has launched a Good Morning Britain “campaign” for “men to seize back their country.”
-----------
Morgan’s latest blustering rant about how feminists have got “carried away” was prompted by Thandie Newton referring to God as “her” during the Emmys.

Enraged by this gender-flipping, Morgan said it’s time to flip “all this sexist nonsense on its head and go the other way” – inventing the terms “Father Nature”, “father tongue”, and “hu-woman”. The “world’s gone nuts”, apparently, and the “future of mankind depends on” this latest campaign.
------------
You only have to spend five minutes on an incel forum to see how Piers’s joke really isn’t very funny.

Man who believes earth is 6,000 yrs old helping to revise Arizona's education standards on evolution

Thanks to Arizona’s Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas, a committee tasked with revising the state’s science curriculum standards on evolution now has as one of its members a man who takes the bible literally when it comes to how life on earth was formed.

As the Phoenix New Times points out, Joseph Kezele is the president of the Arizona Origin Science Association, an organization that promotes young earth creationism — a worldview that looks to the bible as a historical and scientific record. Now, just in time for the final review on teaching standards regarding the theory of evolution in Arizona public schools, Kezele was appointed to an eight-member panel tasked with doing the job.

-----------------------------
From the Phoenix New Times:
Kezele successfully convinced other members to de-emphasize evolution in at least one instance.

The committee signed off on changing a reference to evolution as “the explanation” for the unity and diversity of all living and extinct organisms to “an” explanation.

Somewhat Optimistic I know - But Could The Patriarchy Be On The Run?????

I rate Laurie Penny as a writer and a feminist. She is wise beyond her years - but I think she has somewhat put the cart before the horse on this. The Patriarchy will cling onto power with every breath in their body..... it is what the do and have done for a millennia!

A Tale of Two Mugs

Once upon a time I had a young lad called Joe working for me. He was 16, an apprentice, and he was a glorious fool. He frustrated me greatly but I loved him. I was his work Mum. He grew into a young man and I would spend such time with him talking about his great plan, how he was going to break away from the business and do something bloody marvellous. The xmas before he left my employ I had this mug made for him:

Operation Stop Sues (Soph) Squawking was a tongue in teeth joke with a young man who literally did things like stand in the middle of the office, after a bollocking, and smell his own shoe. And as result I would be a ranting old bint.

In retaliation, for my birthday a few months later I got this:

Best present ever. I used it for hot chocolate.

Now, Joe left the business about a year ago. He had successfully completed his apprenticeship, and buggered off to Barcelona for a job. That did not last long and he was back in the UK shortly after. This May I got a reference request because he was seeking a grant for Uni. I was so happy for him. He was shining.

2 months ago, my Joe, went into the local woods and hanged himself. He was 19 years old and had the whole world ahead of him. He was struggling with mental health issues which he kept secret from his family. I knew he had some issues with anxiety, we had talked about it a lot, and I had referred him to a councillor. It was not enough.

He was a glorious fool, and a young man, and complicated, and clever. He took his own life. Too many young men do. RIP my Joe

No-one gets to drink out of his mug anymore.

1066, Hitler, the Corn Laws... Why are Brexiteers the basic bitches of history?

Why are top Brexiteers’ references to history always so… basic?

Boris Johnson, writing in his Telegraph column today, referred to 1066 – surely the cheapest novelty mug in the giftshop of English history.

“If Chequers were adopted it would mean that for the first time since 1066,” he writes, “our leaders were deliberately acquiescing in foreign rule.”

This is, of course, wrong.
-------------
The main problem is the sheer basicness of the reference. Why do these Brexiteers only ever have sub-GCSE historical references to wheel out? Less than three months ago, as another example, Jacob Rees-Mogg was warning Theresa May that reneging on her Brexit promise would lead to the same fate of Conservative prime minister Robert Peel when he repealed the Corn Laws in 1846.

This was also wrong. History absolved Peel’s decision to put country above party – something Rees-Mogg and other Corn Law-warning Brexiteers appear to have overlooked.
