Everyone on DU should see this

The new film, Sorry to Bother You, is bringing the creeping loss of workers' rights and dignity to a boil. Democrats, ready to reclaim your union mission?

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/09/sorry-to-bother-you-is-the-perfect-film-for-labor-day.html?

From today's Slate review:

Boots Riley’s film, released earlier this summer, is a funny and insanely inventive trip that has been accurately described as science fiction with a dollop of magical realism. But from the perspective of workers’ rights, it’s frighteningly accurate in its depiction of the world we are heading toward.

In the film, the main character, Cassius Green—played by Lakeith Stanfield—and his friends work at RegalView, a telemarketing company. The employees get only commissions and no wages at all. So far, this doesn’t depart from what’s legal in the real world: Generally, employers are allowed to pay salespeople on a commission basis (although what they’re paid has to add up to minimum wage and in some cases overtime too). In this case, the reality of what is happening in the real-life labor market is actually sometimes worse than the fiction. For example, supermarket baggers or other similar workers have sometimes been paid only in tips, which is plainly illegal. And Amazon’s Mechanical Turk website allows people to assign tasks for as little as a penny. In such cases, many workers end up with paltry earnings. And then there are the gig economy companies that fraudulently treat their workers as independent contractors, paying only commissions to their workforce, who alone bear most of the expenses and virtually all the risk.

The shine is officially off Trump's turd

I ran into a young, visibly Republican voter yesterday (they always look scared and uptight) and asked if he was registered to vote, do consider voting for Dems in November, etc.

The response? He said he just didn't feel like voting at all this time.

What happened to the exciting new fuhrer? The Trump thing was always a lot of gaslighting propped up by opportunistic oligarchs, teen basement dwellers and hyper-capitalist media pundits leveraging Trump for entertainment dollars. Even "Trump's economy" is fools gold: it was Obama's economy and he had to extract it from an earlier Republican recession. It was Trump's job to spread the recovery out to the rest of us, but he gave all the gains away to an overpaid minority.

The shine is gone. The gas is leaving the bag. Trump's voters just don't feel like voting. The Trump product is last year's trend and all the packaging is getting twisted up in a hall of media mirrors. In fact I no longer fear the Republican swamp. It was always more of a consumer culture than a citizen's movement in the first place. (Look at the ratio of White Nationalists to counter protestors). The glitter on the turd is gone. The gas is out of the bag. The facts are rising out if the swamp like lotus blossoms. Choose your metaphor.

And the Democrats, who actualy have a movement and a substantial, progressive platform, are getting hotter.

Stay the course. Campaign hard and with resolve. The wind is at our backs, but we must still stear the ship.

In fact, there has never been a better time to go door-to-door for a Democratic candidate or to put out signs. Why? The context is a multiplier. For every citizen we convince that voting is sexy, ten more will "get it" when the first citizen you inspire spreads it to their friends.

Replace Trump's phony shine with a spine and we will have a renaissance.

Libertarianism is officially dead

The events of this past week, indeed of Trump's entire self-serving, hyper-capitalist modality, have done us at least one favor: Ayn Rand's libertarian creed is now exposed for what it is – lawless, self-serving chaos.

We have had several centuries of historical experiments and the outcome could not be more clear: good government and robust economy and meaningful participation in both is a BALANCING act. These in pure form do not work:

monarchy
capitalism
libertarianism
socialism
communism
anarchy

If we define democracy as a civic infrastructure informing a civic economy it escapes the list above and we can position it as an emerging alternative leading towards a solution.

When protesters shout "this is what democracy looks like!" they (we) are effectively acknowledging that there are no clean, simple solutions. Complex and messy civic involvement is really quite natural. The new thinking in biology supports the notion that a complex balancing of the individual with the collective, freedom with responsibility, has always lead to the most satisfactory state of health (homeostasis). The new paradigm I'm fond of expresses this balancing act thus:

A civil, democratically informed, infrastructure gives rise to a civil, small business economy (with plenty of room for a not-for-profit sector). The soundbite version:

DEMOCRACY =
CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE x FREE ENTERPRISE

(Feel free to provide balance to my language in the great North African tradition of uncompleted sentences in group decision-making).

Muellar may be pursuing obstruction as a front.

After all the buckets of information have rolled in about Trump's dalliance with the Russian mob (so quaintly referred to as "oligarchs" and "Putin" and "Russia" ) after going bankrupt in Atlantic City, it seems clear Trump is a traitor. He's a traitor in plain sight with the charm of a 4 year old saying, essentially "look Mom, I'm cheating." (This childish modality obviously appeals to his base).

Could Muellar's apparent focus on obstruction of justice simply be a distraction while piecing together an argument for criminal conspiracy with an enemy of the American people?

On every car bumper, people:
Homemade signs saying "Vote for Constitutional integrity, vote for Democrats Nov 6" (etc.)

This chart could win Democrats both the House and the Senate

DAILYKOS:
"Democrats [should be] pounding on this chart every single day'

https://m.dailykos.com/stories/2018/8/13/1788002/--I-don-t-understand-why-the-Democrats-are-not-pounding-on-this-chart-every-single-day?detail=emaildkre

Yes, it is quite the chart. It’s so eye-opening, in fact, it prompted equities analyst and Bloomberg Television contributor Barry Ritholtz to state: “I don't understand why the Democrats are not pounding on this chart every single day from now until the midterm election.”

Indeed.

Coincidentally, the above chart looks eerily similar to a graph that shows a sharp divergence between wages and productivity since Ronald Reagan made the world safe for greedy assholes again

Krugman: Why Pelosi is so demonized

Raw Story quoting Krugman in NYT:

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/08/paul-krugman-reveals-republicans-obsessed-demonizing-nancy-pelosi/

Despite all the attacks on her, Krugman argues that Pelosi is a historically successful speaker of the House. Under her leadership, Democrats blocked President George W. Bush’s efforts to privatize Social Security; she was a key reason the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, passed; she guided major financial reforms through the chamber; and she helped make the 2009 stimulus bill a reality, which staved off some of the worst effects of the Great Recession.

“It’s quite a record,” Krugman wrote. “Oh, and whenever you hear Republicans claim that Pelosi is some kind of wild-eyed leftist, ask yourself, what’s so radical about protecting retirement income, expanding health care and reining in runaway bankers?”

Economist on Salon: "I hope to god we have a downturn when Donald Trump goes up for reelection."

Mainstream economists no longer mince words:

Salon:
https://www.salon.com/2018/08/12/the-end-is-near-a-play-by-play-of-the-coming-economic-collapse/

I hope to god we have a downturn when Donald Trump goes up for reelection. The political models say that rate of change is highly correlated to throwing out an incumbent. Not that I hope for people to lose jobs, but I sure do hope for all our sake's we get rid of that guy.

"Trump’s tax cuts, even though they’re going to the wrong people to stimulate the economy strongly (the rich don’t spend anywhere near as much of any change in their incomes as the poor), will still stimulate it a bit [just before a downturn]."

"...workers have no bargaining power these days."

Contained as of today: California fires: 70%. White Trumpian Nationalists: 90%

Fires have been severely curtailed today in northern California and in a weird parallel, another kind of containment has occurred. Less than two dozen white nationalist bozos turned up in DC for their assinine "Unite the Right" anniversary. And they were met by hundreds upon hundreds of patriots standing up for the US Constitution and a peaceful, multicultural society. The ratio of resistors to imbeciles was exhilirating.

What's going on?

Get out the vote friends. We're on a roll.

The best news

... is each one of us with a friend and a clipboard walking through the streets of America speaking up for democracy... and the Democrats!

Just Google your local Dem headquarters. Or simply commit to smiling at every tollboth and retail counter and ask your fellow Americans if they've registered to vote and do consider the joy they will experience knowing they did their part to save their country.

Trump's leaving the Whitehouse...

... IF WE WANT IT! (paraphrasing John Lennon and Yoko Ono). But don't wait till the day after the election! Please start planning to help get out the vote.

1) Google your local Democratic headquarters, contact them, and ask where you are needed most. They will assign you to a town or neighborhood and provide specific addresses to go door-to-door (and they'll provide a clipboard with helpful guidelines).

2) Bring a friend or two for company and confidence. This is what fellow DU member "underpants" says about safety:

"You won't get much hassle – in fact I had people thank me for doing what I was doing - from both sides. I had 2 people give me a hard time out of those 1,400 doors."

But campaigning with a buddy is more about enthusiasm. You are saying with your group energy: "We can't wait to vote!" That's infectious.

3) You will probably be asked to emphasize certain points while speaking to people, but you'll quickly get the hang of it and can speak in your own words. Always be polite and let the person feel heard. Just standing calm and convinced is a better argument than getting into a huff. Let your warmth and calm be a model for the better party. Inspire people to vote, don't tell them to.

4) Tell your social networks you are planning to go door-to-door. Start a fever in your network.

5) Have fun saving your country! Tell your social network the election night party is at your place and anyone who goes door-to-door gets a kiss (or whatever your scene would find charming).

I welcome corrections and further suggestions below. When I first posted this under a less scintillating title, a rather street smart DU member (those "underpants" again!) recommended bringing along a Sharpie:

Have a Sharpie type pen with you. You probably will have some sort of flier to leave at the door for non-answers. If there is any kind of school flags or anything add a note to the flier like "Go Hokies!" "Go Hoos!" If you don't know the mascot have your phone and google it. Or you can just add a "Tim says Hi!" type thing.
