Despite Parkland, States Plow Ahead With New Pro-Gun Bills

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/despite-parkland-states-plow-ahead-with-new-pro-gun-bills

Last month’s massacre in Parkland, Fla., which killed 17 high school students and staff, kicked off a national conversation about the need for increased gun control.

But gun rights supporters are playing offense as well as defense. Despite Parkland, Republican lawmakers in a number of states are quietly advancing a slew of NRA-backed bills. In some cases, they’re even citing the shooting as a reason why we need more guns, not fewer.

Even as gun control legislation remains stalled in Congress, the NRA has campaigned for 15 measures in 11 states that would further loosen gun restrictions. Among other things, the bills would strengthen existing stand-your-ground laws (Wyoming and Idaho), allow people to carry handguns without a permit (Oklahoma), and expand the list of places where people can carry guns (numerous states).

Here are five pro-gun bills that have moved forward in state legislatures since the February 14 shooting:

Democrats question Levi Sanders running for Congress in a district he doesnt live in

http://www.concordmonitor.com/How-can-Levi-Sanders-who-lives-in-the-west-of-NH-run-in-CD1-to-the-east-15929819

Levi Sanders made national headlines as he announced his bid for the U.S. House in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District.

When you have a famous father – Levi’s the son of U.S. senator and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders – it’s only natural.

But here in the Granite State – Sanders’s announcement also grabbed attention – and some derision – because he lives in Claremont, near the Vermont border and far from the First District, which covers the eastern part of the state.

While it’s uncommon for a candidate to live outside the district in which they’re running, it is legal. The U.S. Constitution only mandates that House members reside in the state they serve.

Sanders also made news by becoming the eighth Democratic candidate – including two strong supporters of his father’s 2016 White House bid – to try and succeed retiring four-term Democratic Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.

NBC: White House Preparing To Oust McMaster As National Security Adviser

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/nbc-white-house-preparing-to-oust-mcmaster-as-national-security-adviser

The White House is preparing to replace National Security Adivser H.R. McMaster as early as next month, NBC News reported Thursday, citing five unnamed people familiar with the discussions.

The move, according to NBC News, has been orchestrated by White House chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis.

CNN reported last week, citing a half dozen unnamed administration and defense officials, that McMaster was considering options to return to the military.

McMaster became national security adviser after Michael Flynn’s ouster. Flynn was pushed out after reports revealed that he had spoken with Russia’s ambassador to the United States about sanctions before Trump took office and lied about the conversations to other senior administration officials. Since then, Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about those conversations, and he is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.
