Gary Glitter freed from jail after serving half of 16-year sentence

Former pop star was jailed in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2023/feb/03/gary-glitter-freed-jail-half-of-16-year-sentence-reports

Gary Glitter outside court in London in 2015.

Gary Glitter has been freed from prison after serving half of his 16-year sentence for sexually abusing three schoolgirls, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed. The 79-year-old left HMP The Verne – a low-security category C jail in Portland, Dorset – on Friday after eight years behind bars. The former pop star, who had a string of chart hits in the 1970s, was jailed in 2015. He was freed automatically halfway through a fixed-term determinate sentence and will be subject to licence conditions.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was at the height of his fame when he preyed on his vulnerable victims, who thought no one would believe their claims over that of a celebrity. He attacked two girls, aged 12 and 13, after inviting them backstage to his dressing room, and isolating them from their mothers. His third victim was younger than 10 years old when he crept into her bed and tried to rape her in 1975.

The allegations only came to light nearly 40 years later when Glitter became the first person to be arrested under Operation Yewtree – the investigation launched by the Metropolitan police after the Jimmy Savile scandal – when police detained him at his home in 2012. An MoJ spokesperson said: “Sex offenders like Paul Gadd are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest licence conditions, including being fitted with a GPS tag. If the offender breaches these conditions at any point, they can go back behind bars.

Glitter had faced the prospect of dying in jail when he was sentenced in 2015 to 15 years by a judge who told him that – while the offences took place at a time when, in respect of one of them, the maximum sentence was considerably lower – new guidelines meant he would take revised options into account. Judge Alistair McCreath said all the victims were “profoundly affected” by the abuse and that it was “difficult to overstate the gravity of this dreadful behaviour” when referring to the assault on one victim, telling Glitter he was able to attack another “only” because of his fame. “You did all of them real and lasting damage and you did so for no other reason than to obtain sexual gratification for yourself of a wholly improper kind,” he added.

'Chance of a lifetime' Vermeer exhibition to open in Amsterdam

Rare exhibition assembles 28 paintings by enigmatic Dutch master in one place

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/feb/03/chance-of-a-lifetime-vermeer-exhibition-to-open-in-amsterdam

For once, say its curators, “the chance of a lifetime” may be right: never before have so many works by Johannes Vermeer, the luminous 17th-century Dutch master, been assembled in the same place – and it is highly unlikely they will be again. Of the fewer than 40 paintings most experts attribute to the artist, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has obtained 28. Opening next week, its first Vermeer retrospective has sold more advance tickets than any show in the museum’s history.

“Vermeer makes the clock stop,” Taco Dibbits, the Rijksmuseum’s general director, said. “He gives you the feeling you are there, with that person, in that room, and that time has stopped. And time, most especially today, is what we all long for.” Born in 1632, Vermeer is the most enigmatic of the Dutch masters. Besides his canvases, nothing of him remains: no letters, no writings, no diary. He trained as an artist, but his work was barely recognised during his lifetime, mainly because, in a strongly Protestant country, he converted to Catholicism when he married at the age of 21.

Museums and private owners in seven countries have lent masterpieces for the show, including almost all of the intimate, atmospherically lit domestic scenes – a maid pouring a jug of milk, a girl stitching lace, a woman at a virginal – for which Vermeer is best known. London’s National Gallery has sent Young Woman Seated at a Virginal; the Louvre in Paris supplied The Lacemaker; and the National Gallery in Dublin lent Woman Writing a Letter With Her Maid. Other artworks have come from Berlin, New York and Tokyo.

Some have not journeyed far, of course: the Rijksmuseum’s four Vermeers, including The Milkmaid, are on show, and perhaps the artist’s most famous work of all, Girl With a Pearl Earring, was just down the road at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. But the great fragility of the paintings, most of which were completed between 1655 and 1670, their value, and the fact that they have become the prize possessions of many of the museums that house them, mean they very rarely travel.

You'll Want to Visit One of Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat on Your Next Trip (with pics, pics, pics)

The popular review site just named its tenth annual ranking of the nation's best restaurants.

https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/yelp-100-best-restaurants-2023-travel-destinations

Foodies across the country will be pleased to know that there's a new valuable list on their radar. Yelp just announced its tenth annual Top 100 Places to Eat list, and it features the most delicious restaurants in the US. Don't worry, you won't necessarily break the bank to eat here. The list includes anything from fine dining restaurants to more accessible venues, including food trucks and tiny local stores, that were rated highly by Yelp users.

"From food trucks and sandwich shops to fine dining establishments, the Top 100 list reflects the diverse tastes and uniqueness of our community of users," Tara Lewis, Yelp's Trend Expert, said in a statement provided to Thrillist. "It is powered by the people, not a small group of restaurant critics, and we look forward to consumers continuing to share their dining experiences in their reviews."

The highest ranking spot goes to Broken Mouth, which is located in Los Angeles and flaunts a five-star rating and over 1,300 reviews. The restaurant proudly offers Hawaiian-Korean cuisine, and customers line up for its delicious comfort food dishes, which include spam masubi and meat jun. Kaaloa's Super Js Authentic Hawaiian gets the silver medal, and this time, foodies will have to travel to Captain Cook, Hawaii, to get a taste of its dishes. If you're craving some delicious baked goods, you can set your GPS toward Archibalds Village Bakery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which was ranked third in the top 100 list.

In the state-by-state battle, California wins by a large margin. With a total of 28 restaurants, the Golden State is home to the most establishments featured in this year's Top 100 Places to Eat list, and diners will find top spots spread across Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and more. The Sunshine State is the official runner-up with 14 restaurants located in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Finally, Texas closes out the top three with eight restaurants in the Austin and Houston metropolitan areas making the cut. To take a look at the full Top 100 Places to Eat list and to learn more about the featured restaurants, you can visit this link.

Mother, 27, tells murder trial she hit her lover in the neck with a dagger by 'mistake' then stabbed

him in the heart to stop him making a noise

Shaye Groves, 27, allegedly murdered her boyfriend by stabbing him 22 times
A court heard that Groves kept pictures of notorious serial killers on her wall

A mother-of-one accused of murdering her boyfriend told a court she mistakenly 'hit him in the neck' with the dagger, having meant to grab a money box beside her bed.

True crime fan Shaye Groves is said to have used the dagger she kept next to her bed in a 'passionate' attack on 25-year-old Frankie Fitzgerald last year at her home in Havant.

A tearful Groves, 27, today told jurors he had grabbed her by the throat during a heated row and that she 'couldn't breathe or scream'.

Winchester Crown Court heard that after hitting him in the neck with the dagger he fell back and 'slid slowly to the floor', clutching at his throat. In an attempt to silence his gurgling, she claimed she then stabbed him through the heart after he stopped moving.

Kyrsten Sinema Rakes In Cash from Wall Street

https://politicalwire.com/2023/02/02/kyrsten-sinema-rakes-in-cash-from-wall-street/

“Sen. Kyrsten Sinema raked in campaign cash from corporate leaders at the end of last year as she prepared for a potential high-stakes 2024 reelection bid in the battleground state of Arizona,” CNBC reports.

“Sinema, a centrist swing vote in the narrowly split Senate, switched her party affiliation from Democrat to independent in December. Real estate and private equity leaders, who have long helped to fill Sinema’s campaign coffers, contributed to a healthy cash haul for the senator in the final months of last year.”

Hong Kong offers 500,000 free flights from March to lure back visitors after tough Covid curbs

Airlines Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Express and Hong Kong Airlines will receive the free flight tickets to be distributed to overseas visitors for six months

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/hong-kong-free-flights-visitors-covid-flights-china-b1057382.html

Hong Kong on Thursday unveiled a promotion campaign that will include 500,000 free flights to lure back visitors, businesses and investors to the financial hub after more than three years of tough Covid-19 curbs.

The “Hello Hong Kong” campaign was launched with dancers and flashing neon lights in the city’s main convention centre, next to its famous harbour, with a backdrop bearing the slogan in various languages including Russian and Spanish.

Hong Kong leader John Lee hailled the campaign as “probably the world's biggest welcome ever,” and said it would show that the city was open for tourism while boosting business and investment.

“Hong Kong is now seamlessly connected to the mainland of China and the whole international world and there will be no isolation, no quarantine," he said at a ceremony. “This is the perfect timing for tourists, business travelers, and investors from near and far to come and say, `Hello, Hong Kong."'

Design, Bitches creates Venice Beach bungalow that shows "resilience of archetypes"

https://www.dezeen.com/2023/01/25/design-bitches-bungalow-venice-beach/

Architecture studio Design, Bitches has completed a southern California home that takes cues from the traditional beach cottage and is meant to be "not too precious". The B+B House is located in Venice Beach, a coastal town known for its mix of century-old bungalows and experimental contemporary architecture.

"This specific site is nestled on the edge of the famous 'walk streets' of Venice, where small lots are tightly woven together as the city stretches to the Pacific Ocean," said Catherine Johnson, cofounder of LA studio Design, Bitches. Built for creative clients, the house replaces a 1914 dwelling that had fallen into disrepair. A key design goal was to ensure the new home aligned with the character of the original house and the area's bungalows.

For a slender lot sandwiched between houses, the architects conceived a main dwelling and detached guesthouse in the rear. A small yard serves as a "dynamic connection" between the two buildings, while also providing views of the sky and surrounding palm trees. Rising two levels, the main dwelling is roughly rectangular in plan and is topped with a gabled, standing-seam-metal roof. Inserted into the upper portion is a shoebox-shaped bar that reaches toward the guest house. The two-storey guest house has a square plan. The upper level is carved away to form an outdoor terrace.

"By maintaining the integrity and proportion of the traditional Venice Beach bungalow and adding a bar slid through it, the B+B house makes an argument for the resilience of archetypes – playing out juxtaposition in a small house that speaks to both modernist volumes and ways of life," the studio said. Both buildings are clad in raked stucco and non-oiled, thermally modified ash that will turn grey over time. The guest house also features board-formed concrete.
