Must Read Financial Times Article: Inside Trump's Coronavirus Meltdown

When the history is written of how America handled the global era’s first real pandemic, March 6 will leap out of the timeline. That was the day Donald Trump visited the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. His foray to the world’s best disease research body was meant to showcase that America had everything under control. It came midway between the time he was still denying the coronavirus posed a threat and the moment he said he had always known it could ravage America.

Shortly before the CDC visit, Trump said “within a couple of days, [infections are] going to be down to close to zero”. The US then had 15 cases. “One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.” A few days afterwards, he claimed: “I’ve felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” That afternoon at the CDC provides an X-ray into Trump’s mind at the halfway point between denial and acceptance.

We now know that Covid-19 had already passed the breakout point in the US. The contagion had been spreading for weeks in New York, Washington state and other clusters. The curve was pointing sharply upwards. Trump’s goal in Atlanta was to assert the opposite.

Wearing his “Keep America Great” baseball cap, the US president was flanked by Robert Redfield, head of the CDC, Alex Azar, the US secretary of health and human services, and Brian Kemp, governor of Georgia. In his 47-minute interaction with the press, Trump rattled through his greatest hits.

Trump will kill off so many older GOP voters in swing states that it will cost him the election

We're almost at 90K deaths as of 5/15/2020.

We will hit 100K total deaths in a few days.

By the time November rolls around, he will have killed off so many of his own voters in swing states that it will cost him the election.

The below article was published last month.

It looks like Trump is ahead of schedule.

----------------

An academic journal projects that deaths of 65-and-over Republican voters in several swing states will far exceed those of Democrats.

Mass casualties from the coronavirus could upend the political landscape in battleground states and shift contests away from President Donald Trump, according to a new analysis.

Academic researchers writing in a little-noticed public administration journal -- Administrative Theory & Praxis -- conclude that when considering nothing other than the tens of thousands of deaths projected from the virus, demographic shifts alone could be enough to swing crucial states to Joe Biden in the fall.

"The pandemic is going to take a greater toll on the conservative electorate leading into this election -- and that's simply just a calculation of age," Andrew Johnson, the lead author and a professor of management at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said in an interview. "The virus is killing more older voters, and in many states that's the key to a GOP victory."

Graham shoots down Trump's call for Obama testimony on Russia probe origins

Source: Politico

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday brushed back President Donald Trump’s pleas for the Judiciary Committee chairman to haul in former President Barack Obama for testimony about the origins of the Russia investigation and the FBI’s handling of the investigation into Michael Flynn.

Just moments after Trump appealed directly to the South Carolina Republican on Twitter, Graham reiterated that he does not intend to call Obama before his committee — and he warned of the precedent such an action would set.

“I don’t think now’s the time for me to do that. I don’t know if that’s even possible. I have grave concerns about the role of executive privilege and all kinds of issues,” Graham said in a brief interview. “I understand President Trump’s frustration, but be careful what you wish for. Just be careful what you wish for.”

In recent days, Trump has mounted an aggressive campaign against his predecessor, accusing Obama of illegally targeting his associates during his final months in the White House. Trump has not cited evidence that Obama engaged in criminal wrongdoing, even as he continues to amplify the issue on his Twitter feed, dubbing it “Obamagate,” and accusing the former president of committing the “biggest political crime in American history.”

Whistleblower Rick Bright's complaint shows high likelihood of 'wrongdoing,' watchdog says

Source: CNBC

A government watchdog has preliminarily found a “substantial likelihood of wrongdoing” in the removal of a vaccine specialist from a federal agency overseeing coronavirus response efforts, according to a document released Thursday.

The finding from the Office of the Special Counsel was revealed as Rick Bright, who has filed a whistleblower complaint, was set to testify before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Health about the circumstances of his unwilling transfer to another health agency.

Bright has claimed he was removed as director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority after resisting efforts to increase access to an anti-malarial drug promoted by President Donald Trump as a possible treatment for Covid-19.

In his complaint, Bright alleged that employees at the Department of Health and Human Services and Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response “engaged in conduct that may constitute violations of law, rule, or regulation; gross mismanagement; a gross waste of funds; an abuse of authority; a substantial and specific danger to public health and safety; and censorship related to scientific research,” OSC noted in a letter to Bright released Thursday.

Coronavirus test touted by Trump produces many false negatives: study

Source: AFP/Yahoo

Washington (AFP) - A rapid coronavirus test touted by President Donald Trump and used to test White House officials produces false negatives in almost half of all cases, according to new study by researchers at NYU Langone Health.

The test by Abbott Laboratories, which returns positive results in five minutes and negative in 13 minutes, was compared with machines that have a turnaround time of 45 minutes.

The researchers found that the Abbott test produced false negatives about a third of the time when virus sample taken using a nasal swab was transported in liquid solution, and 48 percent of the time when the swab was dry, which is the method recommended by the company.

The results of the study -- which has not yet been peer reviewed and was posted on a medical preprint site -- were contested by Abbott, which told AFP it was unclear that the samples were taken correctly.

GOP Senator John Cornyn Encourages People To Sign Up For Obamacare After Fighting To Repeal It

WASHINGTON ― After voting more than a dozen times to repeal the Affordable Care Act and leading Senate Republican efforts to dismantle it, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday that the “good news” is that people can sign up for President Barack Obama’s signature health care law if they’ve lost their jobs and need health insurance amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“The good news is that if you lose your employer-provided coverage, which covers about a 180 million Americans, that is a significant life event, which makes you then eligible to sign up for the Affordable Care Act,” Cornyn said in a PBS Austin interview. “As you know, it has a sliding scale of subsidies up to 400% of poverty. So that’s an option for people.”

Fox News Extends Its Own Work-From-Home Directive, Despite Hosts' On-Air Messaging

The cognitive dissonance continues at America’s most-watched news operation.

Some Fox News hosts "are echoing President Trump’s call to 'reopen the country' and urging people to get back to work in the face of the coronavirus threat. But Fox’s offices won’t be opening anytime soon.”

So reports Brian Stelter of Fox rival CNN Business, citing a memo on Friday from John Nallen, Fox Corp’s COO, that extended the company’s work-from-home directive until June 15.

Whether that date holds or not, any reopening would happen in phases, according to the memo. But one Fox source told Stelter that it wouldn’t be surprising if it were extended out further, perhaps until late summer.

“While some [Fox] hosts have expressed caution and emphasized the need for safety, others have been gung-ho about getting back to normal, even while broadcasting from their homes or other socially-distant locations,” Stelter writes. It’s understandable that people “want a way out of this [stay-at-home scenario] ASAP,” and “different approaches are probably appropriate in different places,” he adds, “but it's strange to see Fox stars hosting from home, albeit in hard-hit areas like New York, telling viewers that it's time to get back out.”

Team Trump Pushes CDC to Revise Down Its COVID Death Counts

Source: Daily Beast

President Donald Trump and members of his coronavirus task force are pushing officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to change how the agency works with states to count coronavirus-related deaths. And they’re pushing for revisions that could lead to far fewer deaths being counted than originally reported, according to five administration officials working on the government’s response to the pandemic

Though he has previously publicly attested to the accuracy of the COVID-19 death count, the president in recent weeks has privately raised suspicion about the number of fatalities in the United States, which recently eclipsed 80,000 recorded deaths. In talks with top officials, Trump has suggested that those numbers could have been incorrectly tallied or even inflated by current methodology, two individuals with knowledge of those private comments said.

The White House has pressed the CDC, in particular, to work with states to change how they count coronavirus deaths and report them back to the federal government, according to two officials with knowledge of those conversations. And Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the administration’s coronavirus task force, has urged CDC officials to exclude from coronavirus death count reporting some of those individuals who either do not have confirmed lab results and are presumed positive or who have the virus and may not have died as a direct result of it, according to three senior administration officials.

Officials inside the CDC, five of whom spoke to The Daily Beast, said they are pushing back against that request, claiming it could falsely skew the mortality rate at a time when state and local governments are already struggling to ensure that every person who dies as a result of the coronavirus is counted. Scientists and doctors working with the task force, including Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have said the U.S. death toll count is likely higher than is being reflected in government data sets. And several local officials in hot spot areas said they’ve seen hundreds if not thousands more deaths over the last two months than in the same time period over the last several years. They presume many of those individuals contracted the coronavirus.
