(12,651 posts)Lined in ivory silk with square ebony buttons. It was a calf-length sheath coat cut with kimono sleeves and a wide shawl collar that draped across the shoulders as if it were a fur stole or could be pulled up like a hood. Perfect for walking down 5th Avenue in the winter. She promised I could have it as part of her will - which was never updated since her husband died in 1966...
When she passed, her "lawyers" decided since she never had kids, everything she owned could be auctioned off to settle her estate. And that it would be fine to just give any near relatives or anyone her husband had in his will $5k to go away and not bother them for the rest of the $5 million or so they recouped from that auction. That coat was auctioned off for $18k at Sotherby's.
I still curse them whenever I see a really nice red wool coat.
