(59,996 posts)Epstein was/is a very wealthy man, who leaned toward Democrats in his political contributions - as did a younger Donald Trump. Very wealthy donors get invited to parties and private events for candidates. This gives them the perception that they have access to the candidate and that they will be listened to - and, in fact, they do have some impact on positions. However, it does not really make them friends.
In Bill Clinton's case, he also raised money for his Foundation, that does good work - which it could not do without the money that he raises. The comments that Epstein provided a plane for a trip to Africa for Clinton and others from the Foundation is no different than this -- and the key is what Clinton did on that trip. He was there supporting and reviewing programs that his Foundation sponsored that did things like fight AIDS.
No one is one dimensional and people do compartmentalize their lives. Epstein clearly wanted to be seen as one of the power elite --and he got some level of that by giving money. I would bet that Epstein was smart enough to know that many of the influential people he gave money to to make himself connected to the rich and powerful, would work to get him charged and end trafficking if they saw anything of that nature. For someone skilled at estimating risk, it is very likely that what he gave for access was legal contributions to campaigns, PACs, and NGOs .. rather than offering something illegal and immoral, which if exposed would destroy their careers?
It is possible that others, who seemed to share the same lack of values were completely aware of everything.
