I'd bet good money they were trying to defuse reaction against Trump a bit.

We'd cancel but we already did a long time ago. NYT has a multiply proven and well documented record of sabotaging Democratic candidates, especially their 2-year "genteel" hatchet job on Hillary, and helping elect Trump to help Republicans.
