61. I'm an oboist, or was. Playing the oboe often meant opportunities

to play with orchestras on a pick-up basis. That Euro tour was one such instance. Now, mind you, I had to pay for the trip, about $2500 for a two-week 7-country performing tour, but it was more than worth it. The vocal group was world-class, so we had great audiences and got to play in cathedrals and large halls in major cities. In fact, taking the orchestra with them was my idea, introduced at their annual Messiah performance and rehearsals. I was always principal oboe for that orchestra for those performances.

So, it ended up being a popular idea and the other orchestra members were eager to go, so we went. Great fun, although in our 14 days, we played 13 different venues, so we spent an awful lot of time on the tour buses, traveling to the next city. Still, I got to see a lot of places I hadn't visited before, so, it was all good.

I never ate in any American fast food place, either. Why would I, with local restaurants, pubs, and cafes everywhere?

That's not it at all gratuitous Dec 2019 #1
