In the first census in 1790, Virginia was the largest state by far, with a population of almost 750,000. The smallest state was Delaware, at just over 59,000. There were 16 states by then - Vermont, Kentucky, and Maine had joined the original 13.

Virginia was 12.65 times larger than Delaware. I doubt that the Founders could have envisioned that in 2020 the largest state would be 70 times larger than the smallest.
