not in the Onion, but in the Buffalo News.
The article featured people in health care who are leaving rather than get vaccinated. There was a woman who had been a charge nurse. She mentioned caring for covid patients and seeing first hand what it does to people. But she said that she is concerned about the vaccine because she didn't know what the effects would be a few years down the road of "putting something into my body." So she is claiming a religious objection, based not on an established denomination, but on her "personal beliefs." She is on unpaid leave waiting for the outcome of a suit that challenges Governor Hochul's refusal to allow religious exemptions.
Another nurse, an LPN, is getting his RN degree and just has one semester left, so he got the vaccine against his will so he wouldn't be forced out of his RN classes. Said that he could not afford to be out of work AND to lose the investment of his money and time in his classes because he is married and has children. But he believes that it was wrong for the state to take away his freedom of choice.
The dissonant jolt for me was in his final comments at the end of his interview. He revealed that his wife currently is very ill with covid, so "maybe" it's good that he did get the vaccine because he didn't know how they would have coped if both of them were down with it at the same time. But, he still believes that it was wrong to force him to give up his freedom of choice. No word about concern for the well-being of his wife or for his children's exposure to her. Just a feeling of bring a victim of the state.
