I think what makes it harder for us democrats is that we have several audiences . There are those who are following politics closely and with which nuance and constructive criticism is a good thing.
The audience that makes us win election in swing states is less focused on the nitty gritty on how things can or can't get done, they see the end result.
If our messaging is not clear and focused then we lose this audience. The GOP approach is simpler since they are not driven by making good policies. Instead they identify a controversial topic and shift all their messaging to exploit it to get elected.

In my state of Virginia this is exactly what Youngkin did. He went full steam with the CRT nonsense and it worked.
