mainly because I really don't know very much about the game of baseball. Or any sports. I'm a casual fan at best, and right now I'm mainly experiencing the Royals vicariously, through friends and relatives in KC.

I'm not entirely sure why you say "You've seen the last of your team this year, but for the parade," since I'll see them in at least the next two games. Maybe more.

There is a sweetness to the Kansas City affection for the Royals right now.

My son texted me yesterday that when he was waiting in the gate area in Phoenix (where he changed planes from Portland) that he could see at least five or six people with Royals gear, and one with Mets gear. He himself was not wearing any Royals anything, so there were probably more fans for each team than was obvious.

Last year he likewise flew from Portland to Kansas City for the Series, and when he boarded the connecting flight, an announcement was made that there were two San Francisco fans in first class. There was good-natured joshing, genuinely good natured. And as I mentioned before, more than three fourths of KC TVs were tuned in to the game, compared to just over 25 percent of those in NYC. I think that says a lot about fan support, even though it has zero bearing on the abilities of the teams.
