The perpetrator is a member of an outgroup.

When we have another 'normal' (or ingroup) spree shooter; a Jason Dalton, a Robert Lewis Dear, a Dylann Roof, a Craig Stephen Hicks, an Adam Lanza, etc., there will be no mention of collective responsibility, the killers are their own little islands that were not influenced by anyone or anything else. Mental illness, job loss, drug abuse, lack of a telepathic hive mind that apparently Muslims must have, something so the collective can wash their hands clean of the killings.

We'll see these same contortions and dodging from the 'other side' of this current shooting when it happens by the next Jason Dalton, as in the same people who want to make it known that Omar Mateen was a Muslim will be the same people who want to make it known that Mr. 'normal' spree shooter will be mentally ill and nobody else is responsible. Nobody.

The only thing we can do or should do here is realize our biases, in particular our ingroup and outgroup biases.
