2. Charlotte Schools Set New Transgender Bathroom Policy

Schools around Charlotte, N.C., adopted a new policy this week that will allow transgender students to use the restroom or locker room matching their gender identity.

The policy, which school officials said was in the works for a year, may add a new front in the battle over a North Carolina law that limits transgender people to using the public bathroom that matches the sex on their birth certificates. The school policy, set to go into effect when classes resume later this year, includes a requirement that schools use the name and pronoun matching students’ gender identity on things such as yearbooks and diplomas. The district, which includes 146,000 students, said the new measures expand upon its eight-year-old anti-bullying regulation.
