(787 posts)In quotes "a small (EMPHASIS ON THIS WORD) but vocal portion of twitter". The problem with this whole thread is you are trying to read the word small, small but vocal, and twitter out of this and imply that all of mainstream society, all of the media, all white people have been endlessly dogging her.
Like all of twitter and most of online including this site, you find trolls and flamefests. On the other hand the Lochte story is all over the media. You will still find a small but vocal portion of the internet (emphais added) defending him but most of mainstream society, most of the media, and most white people are not defending him.
At the same time, his offense should be looked at proportionate to the crime of perjury and obstruction of justice. Further, I am not sure of the facts. It would only be an actual crime if he lied to authorities. It is not a crime to lie to the press and the american public. If a crime he should be punished, if not a crime he should be shamed but either way its not something that calls for the death penalty or life imprisonment. Because he is a celebrity and the issue is in the press now, he will receive quite a lot of shaming probably disproportionate to the actual crime or offense he committed. Because some things are not about race. Some things are about press need for sensationalism with celebrities.
