(2,895 posts)I had already just about had it with my sister (my only sibling) and her family, and this just sealed the deal. My mom (only surviving parent, but my dad's politics were the same) hates Trump, but she is a right wing racist (you know, the somewhat more genteel, not so blatant type, but still pretty quickly obvious if you are paying any attention), so party before country. She seems to be avoiding talking to me at the moment (I'm sure the hell not calling her), probably because she knows I know she knows the guy is a disaster, so she is even more responsible for him (in my opinion) than my sister, who loved him from the start. My sister lives three thousand miles away, so I'm hoping not to ever see her again, but my mom is only 300 miles away, so I'll probably have to figure out a way to stomach being in her presence. (Not for these upcoming holidays, though.)
This isn't just about the election. I was always the family pariah/scapegoat since (early on) I diverged from the (Republican) party line and other family mores. I can't imagine what it would be like to have family members you otherwise value who would cast such an abhorrent vote. I already find my sister and mother abhorrent, so it just reinforces the existing narrative.
