I distanced myself from a lot of friends and family in 2000. It's harder with family because they are irreplaceable. Still, the process was almost involuntary. I found that I had gone from respectfully disagreeing with family members to disrespecting their point of view and disrespecting them for being gullible and small-minded. I was not capable of the mental gymnastics required to exonerate friends and relatives for beliefs and behavior which I consider unacceptable for myself or for strangers.
Sixteen years later we get Trump. Most of the distancing from my family is already in place. I have moved and most of my new friends are like-minded...no accident. I still grieve over the election because I feel like I have lost my country.
