Not all conservatives are strong authoritarians. For those who are not, will what has become effectively fanatical support of "their side," with its corollary knee-jerk, no-matter-what opposition to Democrats, cause them all to submerge their very real fear of government power? Or will the existing glued-together schism widen back up?
When they are unable to purchase "insurance" coverage for any of their known medical problems, or have to choose a job or put the baby in daycare and go back to work only for the insurance benefits, will that have an effect? Will they resent the zealots who imply not having good coverage through work is somehow their own fault or who tell them, hey, just go to the ER and give a fake address like I do?
Will stories of tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of people, who once lworked in their towns, being imprisoned in inhuman conditions in deportee camps in the desert break through the casual callousness of those just going along with the rest now?
Will shame over international aggression and atrocities, and the humiliation of being condemned by hundreds of nations, the fear of losing national power and prestige, always cause them to draw together, or ... yada yada.
We won this election by the popular vote. I'm not convinced we didn't win it period. But we don't need them all, just some, and the forces of darkness are going to play hell keeping them all.
