If more people were honest and rejected lies and dishonorable behaviors, such as filing phony lawsuits, politics would be very different. No public figure can avoid that these days, but he got far, far, far less of it than his opponent last time and would this time if it came to it.
In any case, I don't think you should imagine tragedy. Besides the extremely short caring curve I mentioned, frankly I sort of suspect by 2018, certainly by 2020, someone else will have risen to leadership. There are a lot of good people out there. Not that he'll be gone, but just maybe sort of a populist elder? That degenerative arthritis in his neck and shoulders looks very painful. My best cast as an oracle, anyway.
But, sure. This final deadline (for the Senate race only) runs in 2 weeks. 2020 we'd be back to the can until or if he won the primary.
