What would it take for Vinton County Trump backers to stop supporting him? Nuclear war, perhaps:
McARTHUR, Ohio--President Donald Trump is under increasing fire following his dismissal of FBI Director James Comey and his disclosure of top-secret Israeli intelligence to Russian officials.
But in rural Vinton County, many Trump voters say it would take a lot more than that - blatant corruption, nuclear war, or even their own deaths - for them to stop supporting the president.
In Ohio's least populous and nearly poorest county, Trump supporters aren't fazed by Trump firing Comey after Trump told Comey he hoped the director would shut down an investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn. They think Democrats and the media are overplaying reports that Trump disclosed top-secret intelligence from Israel to Russian officials.
They feel Republicans and Democrats alike aren't giving the president much of a chance to do his job.
"That's just people trying to get Trump in trouble and get him out of office [to] put somebody else that's going to bend over and kiss the government's rear end even more," said Austin Williams, a 21-year-old Trump voter from McArthur. "I just think, let the man stay in office and do his job, and next time the elections are, when it comes to voting, vote for somebody else if you don't like Trump's way."
Williams, who works as a mystery shopper for Goodwill Industries, said he doubts Trump shared classified information with the Russians (though Trump himself has admitted it). Told that the intelligence was about a threat from the Islamic State, Williams said, "that's just old news."
