You're right, starting in 1968, the "fun" 1960's turned very dark: the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, MLK, Jr. and RFK murdered, the My Lai massacre (although not made known until 1969), the Democratic Convention debacle, and the election of Richard Nixon -- to name a few of the major events of a very turbulent year. The Smothers Brothers show got pulled in early 1969.

I was a freshman/sophomore at San Fernando Valley State College (now Cal State University, Northridge), which had some really crazy goings-on which only added to the surrealism of the times. Part of the Administration Building was burned down, there was a police riot on campus in January, 1969 that nearly swallowed me up (if I had fallen, I'd have been trampled badly).
