(1,483 posts)At the beginning of the trip I was joking with a woman who asked me if I was visiting family in San Diego and I said "no, Tijuana" and we laughed and said, "Same thing!"
Some woman who overheard started hitting me and telling me to "NEVER say that San Diego and Mexico were the SAME THING." I lived in San Francisco and I was like, "Are you okay lady? Sorry I struck a nerve."
After 9/11 the border was closed.
Tens of thousands of people were waiting at the border to go back to work on the US side.
On the US Side when I could finally cross back it was so creepy. A ghost town. Big businesses were shut down until people could come back to work and spend money.
I wondered if the angry woman at the airport owned a business and how that was going for her.
Nothing was bought, nothing was sold. No one was THERE. It was ruinous to the economy.
We simply can't afford to do without our neighbors.
