t's no secret that rural Iowa has suffered through decades of population loss. But newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau underscore the stark reality facing much of the state.

Those figures show that two-thirds of Iowa counties lost population between 2010 and 2017: 71 counties lost residents, while 28 saw gains.

This map shows the distribution of the population change across all 99 counties:
