The NSW govt should have locked down probably nearly a week before they did, but they waited and it quickly got out of hand. Then when they locked down, it was a very vague lockdown-lite where they asked people not to go out if they didn't need to, and weren't clear about what parts of Sydney and surrounds are 'Greater Sydney'. So when people are confused, they just keep on doing what they normally do, which ended up with a lot of positive cases having been active in the community when they shouldn't have been. During that time beaches in Sydney were packed with people, non-essential stores were open, an infected painter travelled from Sydney to Goulburn to work on the hospital because they thought they were an essential worker.
Instead of the generally short, sharp lockdowns other states have done successfully, now Sydney's looking at a very lengthy lockdown until they eradicate the outbreak.
