I got a message on Facebook out of the blue in (mostly) Swedish with a few misspellings that would be typical of someone who lived in Denmark. It was from a guy who had been on the boat I was on when I returned from living in Spain in the late sixties. I last saw him in Sweden in 1970. At the time, I spoke no Swedish myself. He was one of the reasons I had started to learn Swedish in the first place. I liked him and his crowd, and felt like an idiot hanging around with them being the only one who understood nothing that was being said, while they all spoke good English.

Then a few months ago, I got a message in this mish-mosh Scandinavian, and sure enough it was him, who had now been living in Denmark for a few decades. He laughed at the fact that my written Swedish was now better than his. He had observed our descent into hell with Trump, and out of the blue decided to look me up--after 48 years!--and ask how this could happen to us. He had seen from a few other posts that I had followed through with my promise--from 1970!!--that I would learn Swedish.
