4 newcomers vying for open First Ward seat on Grand Rapids City Commission [View all]

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Four newcomers are battling for a chance to serve on the Grand Rapids City Commission representing the city’s First Ward in the upcoming August primary.

The four candidates running for the open seat include a freelance journalist, a part-time school bus driver, a retired business owner and an attorney.

Grand Rapids voters will select one of the four candidates on the Tuesday, Aug. 6 ballot. The top two vote-getters from the primary will then go on to a run-off election on the Nov. 5 ballot to determine who will get the open seat.

The open First Ward seat is currently held by commissioner Jon O’Connor, who is term limited and unable to seek reelection. The other First Ward commissioner, Drew Robbins, will be up for reelection in 2026.
