68,000 Kids In King County Don't Have Enough To Eat: Study [View all]
SEATTLE, WA Some 13 million American children arent just hungry, theyre suffering from real hunger that can leave kids lightheaded and lethargic. That's according to new figures from the nonprofit Feeding America, which operates food banks across the U.S.
One in six children in America suffers from real hunger, also called food insecurity. These kids live in every state and every county in the nation. Washington is home to 284,480 hungry children, including 67,810 in King County.
School Nutrition Association President Gay Anderson, the child nutrition director for Brandon Valley Schools in South Dakota, said the story of the child who liked his sisters ketchup soup concoction isnt as isolated as some might believe. Similar or worse stories are told every day in America, in every city, she said.
Were talking about really hungry kids the ones who look forward to getting that backpack of food to take home for the weekend, Anderson said. Ive heard many times, Oh my gosh, look what we get, and seen the excitement in knowing theyre going to have some food to eat.
