This was back in the 1970's and 1980's. We hit Kauai both times, and found it much more restful and far less frenetic than the Big Island--if a little less available in the way of things to do.
Not that we minded, your beaches are, if anything, far more lovely than the Big Island's!
Both times, I went with my parents (I was about 9 the first time, 16 the second), who had lived in Honolulu while my father was in the Navy. So they definitely knew what to see and what to do--and knew people who lived there who could show us the modern stuff to see and do.
I remember that entire trip quite fondly. We even capped it with a visit to San Francisco, CA, to break up the return trip a bit. There's another city I found I rather liked.
