What we need is effective firearms legislation, not symbolic "gun control". Proposed bans on certain guns largely based on their appearance is almost entirely symbolic. Effective legislation would need to determine who can possess firearms and the only way to achieve this is by comprehensive background checks on all gun transfers.
Magazine capacity is an important issue, no doubt about it. But, in the long term, background checks will do more to stem the flow of guns to people who should not own them.
I think that the country realizes the need for effective legislation. To over-reach on the issue may be squandering precious political momentum.
