In reply to the discussion: Why the continual referral of Senator Sanders as BS? [View all]Igel
(35,386 posts)I can't speak to others.
But last election I referred to HRC as HRC and BS as BS. Tertius non datur, so there wasn't much choice.
Trump was Trump, Paul was Paul, but using bare surnames is not the same as what I still think is the overfamiliar "Hillary" (hardly know the woman) or "Bernie" (again, just a tad too faux intimate, sort of like calling Obama "Barry" or OAC "Sandy" or even KH "Kammy", if anybody even calls her that).
I get that familiarity is the frame, but I don't usually like that kind of linguistic manipulation and react badly to it. Since I couldn't refer to HRC as "Clinton" (referent's taken by a prior CiC/POTUS in the WH), that left HRC. "Sanders" still reeks of chicken in my set of connotations, so BS it was.
It made for a nice kind of (a)symmetry. (D) were initials, (R) were surnames.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
