by their peers, although of course they are picked out and brought along for advancement by the top leaders.

Jackson Lee was a generation older and had been around much longer, but, if I recall, Jeffries, already picked out for possible top leadership, was helped by his role in creating the blue wave the elections followed close on, and he also had stronger support from the house's black caucus, including Jim Clyburn, than she did.

Not something I knew at the time but her colleagues would have, Jackson Lee was embroiled in an ethical scandal over her earlier handling of a staffer's rape allegation (she fired her). After these elections were over, Jackson Lee stepped down from some of her top positions as a result.

As for diverting him to VP, Jeffries is spoken of as speaker material.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
