(146,288 posts)he is not a Democrat, really. I has adopted that label only because he had to to run for the Democratic nomination. Historically, however, he has refused to declare himself to be a Democrat, for his own particular reasons. Despite voting most often with the Democratic Caucus, he insists that he is not a Democrat and has maligned the Democratic party on a number of occasions.
So, his fellows in Congress don't support him, because he is not one of their fellow Democrats. It is that simple.
That is something he cannot change. That is something that he will carry with him throughout his campaign. That is why he was not the nominee in 2016, and it's why he will not be the nominee of the Democratic Party in 2020. In his heart, Bernie Sanders has contempt for the Democratic Party.
Bernard Sanders is sui generis.
