(1,736 posts)There are always outlier voters for 3rd parties, Wallace in 68, Anderson in 80, Perot in 92, Nader in 2000. They are a regular feature of American politics, and they are attractive to some voters. I don't see that changing.
On the other hand, it is possible to strategize to maximize your base voters and unlikely voters such as young voters. That's where Obama succeeded, although Michigan was clearly a lost opportunity like Wisconsin - a state with large urban black populations, voter suppression, and lots of Libertarian-like independents. The outreach to Michigan should have started in 2013, when Detroit defaulted, and the Obama administration didn't take a bold and empathic public stance. They didn't lean into the issues troubling a majority black city and a foundation of support for the Clinton ticket. Sure, it's nice to make a campaign stop in Flint, but it can't compensate for virtual silence on the Detroit bankruptcy.
We elevate a few cranks like Sirota to kingmaker stature. If your presence and ground game is in place, a few renegade Greens, whose will never be 100% Democratic, will not prevent you from winning.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
