the lessons of the plague

the lessons of the plague

when the plague arrived we danced in both fear and denial
calling out for help and proclaiming our own independence
watching those infected we glanced in mirrors of the nihil
milling among masses hiding exclaiming death’s sentence
divided into believers and unbelievers saints and sinners
espousing facts and rumors quibbling over truth and lies
we not givers only receivers never losers always winners
captured by the body’s humors and held behind the eyes
overwhelming those overwhelmed stretching to the snap
rejecting science accepting magic seeking in desperation
grasping at chance being compelled until that last gasp
accepting reliance as rejecting the tragic death respiration
the plague lies deep within hidden sin and constant waits
opaque it seeps slowly unbidden within despondent gates

Equivalence.

I saw a headline a few minutes ago saying that Biden and DeSantis "avoided each other" when Joe visited Florida.

This is a false equivalence. DeSantis lives in and represents Florida. Biden represents the United States. All of them.

When a president visits a disaster area it is simply good manners to welcome him.

Ron DeSantis is a small-minded and shallow man and, quite possibly, a coward. Being ashamed or afraid to meet a potential adversary in peace, for a common cause and with mutual respect is important and a big demonstration of maturity.

Do his supporters respect his accepting Federal money and assistance when he denied it to others? Do they think him appearing on the same stage as the President is a bad thing?

Working together for the common good, even if only in appearance, used to be a given in such political and social situations.

Those who would eschew such niceties are weaker humans.

Ware Shoals man charged with attempted murder after assaulting officer

Source: Greenwood Today

According to the report, officers told Hughes he was under arrest for trespass after notice and attempted to place Hughes in handcuffs. Hughes began hitting the emergency stop button for the gas pumps and actively resisting officers. Hughes then got one officer in a choke hold, causing the officer to nearly lose consciousness. The officer was able to drive stun Hughes in the leg with a taser, but to no avail. The officer then used the taser to drive stun Hughes in the abdomen, causing Hughes to release his grip enough for the officer to break free.

Hughes continued to resist other officers until they were finally able to get him in handcuffs.
