Political Merchandise

Hello,

I’m a Brit who follows American politics with a great deal of interest. Not just because the political climate in the US has such a broad reach across the world but also because it tends to be far more bombastic and interesting than in the UK. Our politics mirrors yours in some ways but seems to be a less polished version of what US politics has become. To an outsider, politics in the US seems much more partisan and is tied in with the media in a way that is growing in the UK but is still a bit more covert. Though our media support parties in a subtle way there is less of the open cheerleading that appears on some of your more biased news outlets.

Another difference is the way that people support parties. I guess politics is still more of a taboo subject in the UK – it’s not the done thing to be overly vocal about politics in social situations. People might show their support with a subtle sign in the window of their house but would never wear buttons or hats that denote allegiance to a particular party. There are many less examples of merchandise too - mugs, key chains etc.

I’ve been a collector of political memorabilia for a while now, buying them via websites that specialise in that sort of thing.

So I have a question for you, what are the most memorable, funny or just plain weird pieces of political merchandise that you have seen over the years in US elections? Things like the Barack Obama bottle opener, for example.

Thanks!

Hello from a Brit abroad

Hello,

I've been staying in the US for about a year now. Very interested in the political scene here. Especially as things in the UK are all a bit dire at the moment.

Looking forward to speaking with you all.
